Bases touched
We just had a tournament this weekend, and one thing used to determine standing is the number of bases touched by each runner. Touched means the runner safely reached a base without going out. (so a runner that gets home safely has touched 4 bases and so on)
Any chance of counting the bases being added at some point?

Re: Bases touched
We can add it to our enhancement list. We have never heard of this rule used for determining standings. Do you happen to have a link describing the rule so we can have a reference? For example, do touched bases by error count? Fielder's choice? etc?

Re: Bases touched
I contacted the president of our association and this is his reply:
"that is common for every tournament I have ever been in.
It is used as a tie breakers.
Runs are usually limited to a max of + or - 7
Bases Touched are usually maxed at + or minus 30
Traditionally it is runs as the first tie breaker and bases touched as the next tie breaker"
That's all I know, I just scores 'em the way they tell me to.

OK... thank you. When we get to creating this enhancement, we will search further for rules around it so we make sure it is done according to a standard. We like to make sure we can reference some kind of "official" source for our features so when the next customer comes along and asks "why did you do feature XYZ this particular way", we have somewhere to refer them.

Re: Bases touched
Yes, we have slugging percentage and OPS, but it sounds to me like total bases as being described here would include things like on base by error, on base by fielder's choice, etc where as slugging percentage and OPS do not.
That is why we really need a reference before making any updates for this so we can understand what to include in the calculation.

Re: Bases touched
I've been looking myself, I can't find any references. To the best of my knowledge it doesn't matter how they got on base, its just if they safely touch the base. We have a 5 run maximum on our innings, that is quite often reached before 3 out.

Re: Bases touched
Just trying to find out more information:
Are the following true?
1) Your game can end in a tied score (example: Team One: 10, Team Two: 10).
2) The way to break the tie is to determine the total number of bases touched.
3) Let's assume that Team One scored all 10 runs by hitting 10 home runs resulting in 40 total bases touched.
4) Team Two scored all 10 runs by hitting 9 home runs, one triple and one double (the runner at second after knocking in the 10th RBI gets stranded) which results in 42 total bases touched.
5) Team Two therefore wins the tie breaker by two total bases (42-40)?
I've tried finding any tie-break rule(s) that include "total bases touched"...I had zero luck.
What age group is the player?

Re: Bases touched
No offense to the tournament but really that is the tie breaker ... not hits ... earned runs ... total bases ... in a sport filled with statistics ... they decided to come up with a completely useless statistic with no real value ... I mean so say you have second and third no outs ... you are rewarding a team if you decided to walk that batter intentionally should a tie breaker situation arise ... even if you then make the next batter ground into a triple play ... and it rewards reaching on a fielder's choice ... really odd tie breaker ...cherrybomb wrote:I contacted the president of our association and this is his reply:

Re: Bases touched
Perhaps I'm not phrasing it well, or perhaps I don't fully understand the system. I think the way it works is that a team is awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. They also make note of the difference in runs - so a 10-15 game would give the winners +5. Then they also factor in the bases touched. I'm not quite sure how they affect the total to be honest - I don't know if they are only taken into account if there is a tie, or if the difference in bases touched is also awarded to the team. (all I have to do is count those bases, someone else gets to figure out the standings!).
The tournaments I have been scoring are for 9-10 year olds. Not sure what happens as they get older.
