Trying to score a game on the radio

Post by BJWanlund » Sat Apr 17, 2010 9:26 am

I usually tend to listen to Pat & Ron on WGN 720 on MLB.com for the Cubs game (lifelong diehard Cubs fan here), and I really would like to know what the terminology is for the different balls and strikes (i.e. "swing and a miss" for a swinging strike).

Thanks in advance.

you may be somewhat challanged scoreing off the radio. one of the underlying themes for iScore is a "score a what you see" approach. in entering plays and substitutions. But if the announcers do their job and clarify all substitutions and plays - it should work and be fun.

as far as the various lingo for balls and strikes. in some ways not much, just ball and strikes, but they will get colorful, as they should (and sky is the limit on variations.. hi and inside (ball), right down the middle (strike), caught looking, (strike) etc. etc etc.

As another tip, here is a Wikipedia entry with a bunch of "baseball jargon" that may be used by a radio announcer:
