Hit ball out of Batter's Box
Hit ball out of Batter's Box
How do you score an out for a bunt where the batter was out of the batter's box, when making contact with the ball?

Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
Please describe the situation more fully. The batter is allowed to be out of the box when attempting a drag bunt or is attempting to swing at a pitch (NFHS 7-3-1).
What are you wishing to capture?

chadhinze - hmm, does not appear There is a great out button for this. (possible add FTM)... In lieu of the right button, I probably would use "Runner Interference" button, (get a red RI on scorecard). Then make a comment in the note section, batter out, for being out of box when he hit ball, not technically RI. that way no one on defense gets an assist or put out
b walker, - I have not heard of an NHFS exception to having both feet in the box for bunting, are you sure? MLB rule 6.06 (a) A batter is out for illegal action when—He hits a ball with one or both feet on the ground entirely outside the batter’s box. (fair or foul, batter still out). I think i recall you got a shinny new NFHS book. If so please check rule 7-3-2 (I am told it states, Batter is out for hitting ball with foot completely out of the box)and now has a notation for being out if you step on the plate ( heel on line toe/foot on plate) too. Can you clarify your bunting comment...

Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
We have added this to the next release already... it actually occurred during a game for one of our developer's children about a week ago - which automatically makes it a very high priority item.

Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
NFHS 7-3-1 the batter shall not:
Delay the game by failing to take his position promptly in the batter's box within 20 seconds. The batter must keep at lease one foot in the batter's box throughout the time at bat.
EXCEPTION: A batter may leave the batter's box when:
a. the batter swings at a pitch,
b. the batter is forced out of the box by the pitch,
c. the batter attempts a "drag bunt",
d. the pitcher or catcher feints or attempts a play at any base,
e. the pitcher leaves the dirt area of the pitching mound or takes a position more than five feet from the pitcher's plate after receiving the ball,
f. a member of either team requests and is granted "Time",
g. the catcher leaves the catcher's box to adjust his equipment or five defensive signals, or
h. the catcher does not catch the pitched ball.
PENALTY: for failure of the batter to be ready within 20 seconds after the ball has been returned to the pitcher, the umpire shall call a strike. If the batter leaves the batters box, delays the game and none of the above exceptions apply, the plate umpire shall charge a strike to the batter. The pitcher need not pitch, and the ball remains live.

Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
attempt a bunt , is different than hitting a bunt.. Agree if he attempts and is outside the box, not neccesarily out (unless third strike of course). But I contend if he makes contact with a foot out of the box, regardless if a bunt or hit into fair, or foul - he will be called out by rule.
i do not have NFHS rule book with me, (i do appreciate your pull quotes) Can you cut and paste the next paragraph ... 7-3-2

7-3 The batter shall not:
7-3-2: Hit the ball fair or foul while either foot (or knee) is touching the ground completely outside the lines of the batter's box or touching home plate.
7-3-3: Disconcert the pitcher by stepping from the box on one side of the home plate to the box on the other side while the pitcher is in position ready to pitch.
PENALTY: For infraction of articles -2 and -3 the ball becomes dead immediately and the batter is out.

Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
by the way, that is manually typed in not cut and pasted. I take no responsibility for the accuracy of the content provided. does that sound legal enough? haha.
Re: Hit ball out of Batter's Box
thanks, sorry for the manual type...
so i think we can agree, batter out, b/c he hit the ball while out of the box, even while bunting is a legitimate "out call".
What is interesting to note is the touching home plate language, it is different than MLB. (not sure about college). MLB home plate is nothing special, It was one of those bar bet myths in the past, out because step on the plate, not true, as long as heal of foot on line foot can be on home plate in MLB.. (not so now in high school),
