sliding past second

Post by coach1 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:16 am

Runner on first, ground ball hit to short stop who flips to 2nd baseman for the force out. Runner slides over the bag and into 2nd baseman before can attempt throw to 1st for the double play. Umpire calls runner to second out on force, batter to first out for double play. I know the out at second is force out, is the out at first for offensive interference? Thats the only way i see to score it.

My first instinct would be to score it as offensive interference ..
And type a note to describe..

BUT

The next question that popped in my mind, is this a GDP (Ground into double play) by batter. B/ c if you want to force iscore to generate a GDP stat then the batter needs to be out by "double play" button..

But MLB RULE clarifies ...
Rule 10.02(a)(17) Comment: The official scorer should not charge a batter with grounding into a double play if the batter-runner is called out due to interference by a preceding runner.

So back to original inclination. Offense interference.

Now of course this ' interference at second' rule is in the news recently as the April 5 game Toronto lost on such a play by Jose Batista slide into second .. A look at the box score and no GDP scored in that game and Edward encarnacion has no GDP in his advance stats for 2016 per MLB web site. Despite the mlb play by play describing it in text as a ground into double play . But the official score would not treat as such statistically,
