Bad bounce... hit or error?

Post by triple » Thu Jul 30, 2015 3:54 am

the ball makes a bad bounce in front of a defensive player without touching the player. Is it an error or a hit?

Same situation, this time time the ball touches the player (foot, shoulder, glove...), error or hit?

In general, a bad bounce as the fielder is trying to field the ball will result in the play being scored as a hit for the batter. However, there is still judgement that should be used. The standard is ordinary effort. If the ball takes an unnatural bounce such that a player using ordinary effort cannot handle it, then it is a hit. If it is a bad bounce, but one where the fielder should still be able to handle it, then it would be an error.

It does not matter if the fielder touches the ball or not. Whether or not the fielder touches the ball is never a consideration in judging hit or error.
