Scorebook

Post by GTill » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:34 pm

I would guess that a large number of people who buy your product actually like to keep score - I know I do. I'd like to be able to view the scorecard as it would appear in a real scorebook. You're almost set up for people who don't know how to, or like to keep score.

I'd like to view the scorebook - touch point in the book for the current batter - enter the at bat results - and go back to the scoresheet.

I was extremely disappointed in the product because of this.

Sorry for posting this before I read about the new enhancements. After doing some reading it appears that feature may be in what you've already submitted in the new release. I hope so.

I know how to keep score... I kind of like to keep score. The more I keep score on my iPhone the more I look forward to the day where I'm comfortable enough with this to stop scoring on paper and just produce the finished score sheet at the end.

In order to do that, I really have to be able to look on my screen at a score sheet along the way so that if I screw up I can easily get in and make corrections. Undoing back to where I screwed up isn't going to allow me to abandon the paper sheet. Too easy to get lost and/or lose everything that way.

Great product, however and for 5 bucks an awesome value. Hands down my favorite iPhone app, and I've got a lot of stuff on here...

We are going to try and continue improving the editability of games as new releases come out. Thank you for the suggestions.

I think the scorecard in the latest release is great, but I had a couple things come up while scoring the Brewers/Pirates game last night that may take some correcting and have some requests for enhancement (I didn't see these elsewhere in the forum and hope I am not duplicating):

1. Batting around: The Brewers batted around in one inning, and the person who batted first in the inning, also batted last. The scorecard was not able to handle this gracefully, and it overlapped his two at bats in the same frame, which looks pretty strange, to say the least (first at bat, he walked and scored a run. second at bat, he struck out. There is a K over the scored run). It would be nice to see this handled a bit more gracefully.

2. Substitutions: For the most part, I really like the way substitutions are handled on the scorecard. If you have more than 3, iScore shrinks the rows so that more can fit in the same space. This does get to be a problem if you have a lot of substitutions in the same place in the lineup (I *love* the updated substitution feature - it works extremely well!). In the National League, with lots of Pinch Hitters and Pitcher subs, I ended up with 8 changes in the 9 spot of the lineup. This becomes very compressed and difficult to read. Can it be set to expand at some threshold number of substitutions?

3. Title information: The title at the top of the page gets, to use the technical term, "smooshed". The title currently lists Team: team name Game: date visitor at home and then the runs and the hits for the team being viewed. The Game and the runs/hits for the team currently overlap and are unreadable.

(On a different, but related note - something I track on paper that is game related that I think would be great to see in this header information is Start/End time, Time of Game, Weather, and attendance - some of this could just be done in a generic note field if you didn't want to get too fancy)

4. As someone who is scoring games where I am not right behind the plate with a radar gun, I will likely never be using the pitch spray chart and other information associated with pitch location/type/speed. I would much prefer to just see the pitcher summary for the game at the bottom of the page, rather than the big boxes with the spray charts. Perhaps you could just show that when detailed pitch information isn't captured?

5. Finally, I would like to see summary information on the right side of the scorecard (AB, R, H, RBI) for each batter.

6. I had some players mistakenly marked at the beginning of the game as "Batting". As soon as I realized this error, I removed the "Batting" flag, but the damage had been done - they still display on the scorecard, and I cannot figure out how to remove them. This also seemed to have the added side effect of not removing a player from the available substitution list. If I export, do you think it might be possible for you to remove these, or am I stuck with them at this point (growing pains - not the end of the world).

7. Not scorecard related, but when viewing the stats, it seems to display all players on the roster for the game in the Batting stats. If a player doesn't actually make an appearance in the game, I don't need to see him in the stats. It would be nice to see the players in some kind of logical order besides the roster order, too (preferably lineup order).

This was my first time scoring a game real time with the app. It was awesome. I love the updated substitution feature. I didn't feel comfortable yet not having paper with me (my wife was good enough to score the paper scorecard for me while I experimented). I might use just iScore when I attend Thursday's game, though.

Thanks (and sorry for the novel)!

Sorry for all the posts today, but I thought of something else for the scorecard: For the Position column that displays the player position, I would much rather see the position listed (i.e. CF, SS, 1B) than the number as it is currently displayed (i.e. 8, 6, 3). This would also help avoid potential number confusion with the inning column.

Thank you for the ideas on Scorecard improvements. We have added a reference to this post for our enhancement lists.

Some things about scorecards are going to be personal taste (we've gotten several small improvement ideas), and we will continue building the scorecard functionality. This first pass was based on research of several scorebook looks online (scoring methods differ from book to book).

We intend to eventually have the option of choosing to optionally show lots of different items on the scorecard (there will be a setting page where you can decide how/what you like to see).

Thank you.

I agree 100 percent!

6. This one bit me too. If you have to change the entire batting order you will end up with a full scorecard.

Keep up the great work! You have my vote for App of the Year! or even Decade! :D

Another suggestion is to have the scorebook and the stats be able to rotate to landscape mode.

I know I have harped on it before, but I want to put another vote in for landscape mode. This would be *awesome* for those of us (wanting to be) using ipads with polarized sunglasses (depending on the brand of sunglasses this either obscures the screen or makes it completely unviewable in portrait mode).
