designated hitter, change in line up

Post by coach1 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 8:29 am

The answer is probably posted somewhere but I am unable to find it. In a game when a DH replaces a defensive player its easy to show him in the new defensive position and it reflects it correctly on the line up. How to you then show the playing coming off defense to be the DH. When I make the first change it just shows him in the lineup but no position by his name. Not a big deal but it just came up I discussion with another parent who was scoring the game too.

Once a DH becomes a position player, they are no longer allowed to go back to the role of just being a DH. See section 6.10 of the following link:

Thanks but that isn't my question. When a DH from stating lineup goes into the game for a defensive player in any position it reflects where he is playing on the batting order. The player he went in for is then still on the batting order (actually the DH) but it is blank by his name. I cant find a way to show him as the DH after the change.

Like I said its not a show stopper but just curious if it can or should be done.

We are still reading it as though you are asking why when the DH goes into a fielding position, why another player does not show as DH. The reason is because once the DH assumes a fielding position, you can no longer have a DH. If you have done the defensive substitution putting the DH in a fielding position (say RF), then you will see that RF position next to the player that was previously DH, and there will no longer be a DH on the team.

The player he went in for would not become a DH. They can still be in the batting lineup as a batter, but they will have no position at that point. A player can be in the batting order without having a position. That does not make them a DH - a DH has a very specific role with specific rules.

If this doesn't answer the question, maybe you can ask it with a specific scenario as an example and we can try and explain that specific scenario.
