runs after 2 out error

Post by coach1 » Fri Apr 05, 2013 4:25 am

Sorry if you have already answered this. I know the rule says any runs scored after an error with two outs are unearned. I am confident that the Iscore app takes this in to account as it covers everything else but had the question asked by the parent of a pitcher. Can you confirm how Iscore handles this situation.

Thanks, great app the new updates are awesome! Keep up the good work

iscore handles errors correctly to the extent that it can. Some things are not black and white and require scorekeeper judgement to determine earned or unearned.

Your statement is generally correct regarding errors with two outs, but not absolute. An error can be made with two outs and still have runs be earned. An example:

Two outs, clean single to left field. LF bobbles ball and runner advances to second on error. Next batter hits 2 run HR. Both runs would be earned. Because even without the error, the runner would have been on first and still would have scored on the HR.

Same scenario as above, but instead of a HR, subsequent batter hits a single to plate the run. Next batter strikes out. This would be an unearned run. Because without the error, runner from first would not have scored.

Same scenario as above again, subsequent batter hits a single to plate the run. Next batter also singles. Now it becomes an earned run again. Because even without the error, runner from first would have scored on consecutive singles.

So an error that extends the inning would make your statement true (and iscore will always get this right). An error that allows advancement of the runner, requires deeper consideration. You have to reconstruct the inning w/o errors to determine if runs would have scored.

Using the new advanced scoring feature (enable in settings) in iscore should allow the app to make the correct assessment nearly every time, but there still may be cases where the system gets it wrong just because its impossible to determine without applying judgement.

A quick example of this:

Two outs, bases empty. Double to LF corner. Again LF bobbles and runner takes third on error. Next batter hits a 30 ft swinging bunt down the 3rd base line for infield single. Run scores. Next batter strikes out.

iscore charges an earned run. as scorer, I would determine this to be an unearned run. Without the error, the runner would have been on second and would not have scored on the infield single. However, the app cant determine that. A clean single to the outfield would have scored the run from second and would have been an earned run. So, again, there are cases you simply need to see the plays, apply judgement in recreating the inning without the errors to determine if earned or unearned.

Hope this helps.

Geez Mark! Do you have something against left fielders?

Good explanation though. :)

Ha! What, were you a left fielder?

I just stayed with the same example. No offense meant to any former or active left fielders :-)

Mark,

One of the best explanations or the issue of earned v. unearned runs I have ever heard. :)

I really wish their was an option to allow scorekeeper to manually reconstruct innings to where iscore just didnt assume earned runs. I have had two separate instances on infield singles where pitcher is charged with an earned run but manually reconstructing the inning leaves the runner stranded at third by errorless play. Its frustrating!

Mark I think your explanation is spot on. However how do you make the changes where, in the scorekeeper's judgement, the run is unearned but iscore shows it as an earned run? If it can't be done now is it likely to be in an enhancement to the app in the near future.

I am new to iScore but never had this problem since you could specify whether a run was earned or unearned. I am making the change to iScore because our federation in the UK is recommending its use.

You can override stats manually as described here:

http://iscoresports.com/baseball/kb/faq ... _edits.php

We would love to know the specific scenario where you believe a run is unearned and iScore says it is earned.

I realise this is one of the situations where iScore may not be able to automatically decide whether the run is earned or not and I will follow your suggested link to see if I can post edit it.

The situation is that the first batter hits a fly to right field for a single, right field lets the ball get through him to the fence and the batter reaches third on the error.
Nest two batters strike out with the original batter remaining at third.
Next batter singles with an infield ground ball scoring the runner on third.
Next batter strikes out.
The run scored is shown as earned and the fourth batter is credited with an RBI.
In reconstructing the inning the first batter would not have scored the run before three were out but for the error by the right fielder.
One attempt I have made to correct it resulted in the run being unearned but no RBI for batter four.

I will look at the link you have provided and see if it answers this situation.

Many thanks for the suggestion.

I have looked at the link posted and whilst this will allow me to modify the stats, by reducing the number of earned runs against the pitcher, the run still shows as an earned run in the scorebook. Is there any way to make the scorebook correct?
