2 scoring questions:
1). The outfielder slips as he is breaking for a fly ball. He gets up and runs for it, but after 10 steps, or so, he can't get to it. He probably would have caught it if he didn't slip. Hit or error?
Can any trip, slip, or stumble result in an error?
2). The outfielder misjudged a fly ball and started in on it before going back. The ball tips off his glove. Hit or error?
Is any misjudgment an automatic error or is that considered a mental mistake?
Outfielder error?
Re: Outfielder error?
In both cases, this is a judgement call. The standard is ordinary effort. If a typical fielder exercising ordinary effort could have fielded the ball, then these are errors. If not, then they are not. It sounds like situation number 2 is an error but there can be situations where it isn't. Situation one could be an error, but if the field was slick, then maybe it wasn't.
