Bunt safely but no hit?

I scored a game in which a batter bunted and reached base safe. I used the option for bunt but then at end of game noticed the batter was not credited with a base hit! If a batter reaches base safely on a bunt, not a sacrifice bunt, and no error, why does he not get credited with a hit? Why else would the bunt safely option be offered? Can this be corrected so that when we use the bunt option the batter gets his hit?

There is a stat called BT which is a bunt single. It does count as a hit for batting average, etc.
