Batting Average on Balls in Play
Re: Batting Average on Balls in Play
For the immediate horizon, I think you would be best to calculate BABIP outside the program in excel as all the necessary variables in the equation are provided.
There is a seemingly endless list of 'sabermetric' equations and equally lengthy debate as to which are most predictive and insightful- and that is at the MLB level. youth ball is even more varied.
Unable to satisfy every variation, FTM has traditionally taken the approach to provide what MLB official scorer rules require and then core elemental data that let users build their own stat equations. In the case of BABIP, not sure if it would be consider most for batter or pitcher, or both.
That said, FTM has indicated future releases will include some more additions to stats, but have not provided specifics.. ( GO, and AO are two potential examples that come to mind). I know FTM records user requests and it influences their development priorities.
More long term, FTM has also hinted at the possibility of a more general solution .. A stat builder 'wizard' to let people build a few custom stats by formula (BABIP would be a good example) and then allow user to select what stat columns are displayed. But those features seem like down the road ideas....nothing near term..
