Foul Ball catchable but dropped
Foul Ball catchable but dropped
Batter hits a foul ball that was catchable and dropped. I know its an error but how would I enter that with iscore?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
That is an interesting one because it only stays an error if that batter does not wind up making an out. So you probably don't want to enter it immediately when it happens. If the batter winds up making it on base by a reason other than an error, then just before entering the play for how they got on, you can use Misc -> Assign Error, and give the player that dropped the foul ball an error.

Yeah I know the batter has to get on after the fact. Which they did. Just started using this program was not sure what to do. Assigning the error make sense to me after they get on.

The batter does not have to reach first for the error to be charged as per MLB rules. I think this is a relatively recent change.

Not sure about other rule sets.(a) The official scorer shall charge an error against any fielder:

(2) when such fielder muffs a foul fly to prolong the time at bat of a batter,
whether the batter subsequently reaches first base or is put out;

Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
Thanks for that info as well. I think they should be charged immediately
Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
That was my understanding as well. If you think about it, it is causing the pitcher to expend more pitches, thus could have an impact on the game even if the batter doesn't get on base. I like the change, personally.PetroGuy wrote:The batter does not have to reach first for the error to be charged as per MLB rules. I think this is a relatively recent change.
Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
Does "muff" mean deliberately not catch the ball?
Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
Deliberately dropping a foul ball because it benefits the defense under the circumstances, is a whole different matter, which is what I believe PintoMom is hinting at. If the defense deliberately allows a foul/fly ball to drop safe, with a runner on third and less than two outs, to prevent the runner from scoring after the catch, then it would not be scored an error.

Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
It is definitely an error, regardless of what happens next, and you enter it by recording the Foul ball and then doing Misc->Assign Error
Re: Foul Ball catchable but dropped
caution with the use of " Misc > assign error" it is not visible and thus not editable in pitch by pitch. Make a note when you use it.
of course you can manually over ride assign/un assign the error in stats . but would be nice to have it visible in pitch by pitch to keep the play by play and scorecast clean too .
FTM - this came up months ago, perhaps this is a stronger reason why misc > assign error should be editable in pitch by pitch. Thus you can score it real time and then change it later in pitch by pitch.
