Data Sharing - New Team/Players
Data Sharing - New Team/Players
I posted this in another section of the forum, but the more I think about it, the more I think there may be an issue...
I do most of my scoring on my iPad. However, I do have the possibility of doing it on my iPhone as well (I have both apps). With that being said, I've always tried to keep the 2 in sync via Data Sharing. Recently, and let me see if I can explain this correctly, I updated a team's players' names on my iPad. I then want to sync these to my iPhone. How I was doing this was I went ahead and deleted the team completely off my iPhone (the team and any games associated with that team), then I did the Data Sharing part. However, when I import the iPad data, the team comes across fine, but the new names attempt to map to the old names I had.
The "issue" may be that, for some reason, the iPhone is hanging onto the fact that I USED to have a team named this, and it remembers the players that were in this old team. Does that sound like what might be happening??
FYI: The team comes across as "New", but the players are being mapped to the old names...with no option to add "New".

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
Players and Teams are separate things. Players are only copied as part of data sharing when they do not exist on a device. If a player already exists on a device, it is not copied over again. This is actually intentional. We also do not modify the names for existing players --- this is also intentional. If I am data sharing with you, and I like all my players to just be "First Initial" and "Last Name", I don't want the fact that you use "First name" "Last Initial" to overwrite my version of the players.
If you want to edit player names for players that have already been data shared, you would need to do it on both devices.

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
But, why would it know that I used player X on my iPhone for a team that no longer exists? That is, when I'm bringing in a team from the iPad that no longer exists on my iPhone, why would it attempt to connect my old player's name with the incoming player's name? Since I deleted the team off my iPhone, I'd assume all connects to any players for that team are also gone...or should be gone. That doesn't appear to be the case.

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
It is not done by name, it is done with the internal identifiers. Players have their own identifiers. When you delete a Team, you are not deleting the Players on the team. If you go to Player Manager, they are still there. Players can be members of multiple teams, so you would not want deleting a team to automatically delete the players as well.

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
No, not delete the players, but delete the player from being connected to a team that is no longer there. So, if a new team is imported by the name of the old team, there should still be no connection from the old player to the imported team? Maybe I'm not explaining this correctly??

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
The "connections" between Teams and Players are deleted, but when you data share, the "connection" is recreated. The players are not recreated however. So the name remains the same.
If we brought over the players every time you did this, you would wind up with a copy of the same player every time you deleted a team and did a data share. It would also mean that every time you did it, the statistics for the players would wind up being tied to a different player instead of the existing player.
This is working the way it is designed to work.

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
Ok I understand. I guess I was hoping to have the option to accept the linkage or to add the incoming player as new.

Re: Data Sharing - New Team/Players
We would strongly suggest not trying to do a crazy workaround on this one. It is working the way it is supposed to, and if you wind up with multiple copies of players with some kind of workaround, chances are it is going to make it so the stats from game to game will not be cumulative for the players.
