Merge players not carrying leagues over

I've merged a couple of players together once I figured out it was the same player from a team last season. I use different leagues per season. I would have thought the league assigned to a player should copy to the new player.

nope. the league assignments of the destination player are retained, it does Not merge leagues.

same when transferring in data via data sharing. leagues do not transfer.

I merged a player with my my fall 2010 league into a player with my 2011 league and the 2010 league was not added to the player. Since the player is the game on the same device, I would expect it to have copied but it did not.

That is correct... we will not be adding leagues to a player when merging. A merge is basically saying "treat this second player as though they were the first player". It is not adding the attributes of the second player to the first player --- only changing references in the games so that all statistics apply. It would also not bring over a mistyped name for example. It just uses the information from the original player.

In what case would you not want the league added? The games associated with the original player all have the same league as the original player, so would those stats not show for the merged-into player unless I add the league to the merged-into player and turn the league on to see them?

I would have expected the single attribute info to come from the player being merged into, but the multi-relational data to be a union operation. Maybe I don't understand how leagues work.

The stats show based on leagues assigned to the Games, and merging players does not change that. So the merged player would now have all the stats for any game that either player played on. The leagues associated with a player are a convenience when creating new teams and going to select players that are part of the league you are filtering to, but do not really have a purpose other than that right now.

That clears it up - you're not joining thru the player's leagues to get the stats. I'd still want my leagues to carry over, but now that I realize they won't, I will make a note of the leagues before I merge and then add them to the "new" player.
