I would think the put out or lack thereof would be irrelevant. If the throw goes to third but missed tag it is still a fielders choice to throw to third not second. JMO

are you are suggesting if the defense tries at third, the runner from first would never get a stolen base?

I think if the defense tries for third and gets the out, the runner at second does not get the stolen base (safe on the throw.) But if the defensive try at third fails, they both get credited with stolen bases.

I agree, and hence why it does matter if safe or out at third. if safe, both get SB credit.
(assumes no error of course)

to continue the thought. if error allows runner at third to be safe, then neither gets credit w/ SB, and by rule fielder gets an error. runner from 2nd gets a caught stealing )

MLB 10.07 (f) When in the scorer’s judgment a runner attempting to steal is safe because of a muffed throw, the official scorer shall not credit a stolen base. The official scorer shall credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw, charge an error to the fielder who muffed the throw and charge the runner with “caught stealing.”

Oh the rules of baseball....thanks for all the comments. At least I know how I'm going to score it now, a double steal unless one is put out
