So just to clarify, in the extreme example we gave... perfect 4 2/3 innings, error that should have been 3rd out, then 20 home runs in a row and team loses 20-0, pitcher still gets a quality start?

That is my understanding of the statistic. Since the 20 runs were not earned - the pitcher gets credit for 1 quality start provided:

1: Inning threshold is 5 or less
2: No more than 3 runs before the final out is retired.

I think that is what we have been trying to clarify... every time you have mentioned the part about the runs scoring, it has not said "EARNED" runs, so we just want to be sure that is clear.

As an fyi, there is another definition of Quality Start based on a "Game Score" for a pitcher. It better quantifies the pitcher's contribution to the game whereas the definition presented up to this point has been more of a "team effort" since it relies on the defense. It also accounts for the extreme case of unearned runs --- does not seem a pitcher giving up 20 home runs just because they came after an error should really be considered a quality start.

Here is a link to the alternate method of scoring a pitcher's performance, and the definition as well:
