Error recording in stats

Post by AaronStanford » Mon Oct 04, 2010 8:29 am

Are errors factored in when iScore calculated a OBP and OPS? I think the error would count like a walk not a hit and not be factored in.

Errors are not treated like walks for OBP and OPS. Those stats are intended to show the batters performance, not a fielder's poor performance. Here is the official calculation used for OBP (sports statisticians created these formulas, not us):

OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)

OPS just adds slugging percentage to the OBP value, and slugging also counts reached on error as an at bat.

So getting to base because of an error is not factored in on OBP but counts as an at bat for slugging pct.

That is correct... a batter did not earn the base when they made it because of a fielding error. Offensive stats generally only reflect what a batter earned, not the mistakes of fielders.
