Another way to reach base safely
Another way to reach base safely
A play happened in our game tonight that could not be properly scored with the application.
With a runner on 1st, the batter hit a hard line drive which hit the umpire (in between 1st and 2nd) on the foot. The play was called dead, and the batter was awarded 1st, the runner second.
The "Ball hit Umpire" option was not in the reach base safely options, and I think it should be.

DanLEllis - I presume you saw there is an "other" button option, I use that combined with notes for those very infrequent type plays.
Re: Another way to reach base safely
Yes, I know there is an "other" choice on the OUT menu, not the safe menu. Both runners were safe.

Actually, we did a little more research. A ball that hits the umpire is actually a base hit. You can mark it as a single with a note that says "hit umpire". There is no statistical difference between a ball that hits the umpire and any other single.

Re: Another way to reach base safely
If the ball hits an umpire in fair territory it is a hit because the umpire is considered part of the playing field at that point.

Re: Another way to reach base safely
As a HS umpire, it is way cool that people actually read the rules. FTM is absolutely correct. In this case it should not have been called a dead ball. The only way that a dead ball could be called when the ball hits an umpire is if he/she is outside of the field of play, like 1st/3rd base umpire or home plate umpire as they are usually always set up outside the lines of play.
I would also say adding this as an enhancement would cause people to score games incorrectly.

Thanks . I didn't go anywhere, just didn't have time on the forum. Been busy scoring 65+ games since March. Now just started Fall Ball. Glad to see things are still going on. You've been busy too, increasing your post count from 400 to 900+. Helping lots of folks I'm sure.OhioTex wrote:welcome back brent!
