Using Leagues as a filter
Using Leagues as a filter
I am trying to use Leagues to filter stats but am trying to interstand the "scope" of a league in relationship to Games and Players. Perhaps an example is the easiest way to illustrate my question.
For my example I have the following league structure: 2013 Little League; USSSA; USSSA 2013, USSSA 2014, USSSA 2014 Memorial Day.
All little league games I assign to the league "2013 Little League"; All travel ball games belong to USSSA plus USSSA {current year} plus {name of the tournament} (in this case USSSA 2014 Memorial Day. I set up this structure as I would like to see stats for a specific Tournament (in this case USSSA 2014 Memorial Day), as well as Annual Stats (USSSA 2104) and lifetime (USSSA). I have this set up and it appears to work pretty well.
With this as a background, here are my questions:
1) When I create a new game in a new tournament, when I search for players, will it only find players for the selected leagues? My concern is that if I have a player "Tim Smith" who is thus far only listed in "2013 Little League", that I won't find his name if he's playing for a team in a "USSSA 2014 Memorial Day" game. Another way of asking this question is do I need to choose "All Leagues" prior to doing a player search, and if I assign him to a team playing in one of my Leagues listed above, does he "inherit" the new league (in this case USSSA 2014 Memorial Day)
2) Are spray charts "filtered" by active leagues? I'd like to use all the data I have to check on a players tendencies. If the current game has "Leagues" that the player doesn't have any data in will I see any info in the spray charts?
3) Finally, on game manager, I'd like to "hide" all my "2013 Little League" games now that the season is over but I don't want to lose all the player stats (and spray charts) that I have collected for those players that we may encounter in travel ball.
Sorry for the long question but hopefully it helped clarify my intent.

Re: Using Leagues as a filter
1. When you have the all league turned off and only certain leagues selected, it will only show lists for the players, games, or teams that are in the selected league. When you select a team, you will still see the full roster for the team even if the players are not in the current league, but any of the lists will be filtered by the currently selected league(s).
2. Yes, spray charts are filtered by league as well.
3. If you turn off the All and "2013 Little League" leagues, then you would only see the "rest" of your data for the players, but the data would still be on the device.
In general, we would suggest leaving the All league on except when reporting to filter by just that league. In fact, as of the last release, you can always leave the All league on, and the Team Stats screen now allows you to select league(s) to filter on right from there just for reporting.
If you do prefer shutting leagues off to manage your long lists, and you accidentally create a duplicate player, you can always use the Merge option in player manager to combine duplicate players back into a single player.

Re: Using Leagues as a filter
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Now that I know I have it set up correctly on my ipad (games tagged with the correct leagues), I am not seeing what i would expect to on the team website? (yes, I did an export after verifying data is correct) I have some leagues for our team on the pad that don't even show up on the team website. Is there a way to edit/check leagues for each game via the admin site? Any suggestions to help debug?

@photoJohn
sounds like on your device, you set the games to the correct league, but missed some league assignments to the team.
Solve = go to Team Manager, and re check leagues assigned to the team associated with the team web site. then re export. (only the assigned leagues will show up on Team Web site drop down box)
and yes you can not only review league assignments on the Device but also on the Admin web site BUT with release of version 4.0 of iScore for the iOS, i find the most user friendly way is on the device with iLeague Manager. In 4.0 league manager, you can Click on the right arrow of a league and up pops a way to cross check what games, teams and players are assigned to that league. very slick

Re: Using Leagues as a filter
Thanks for great pointers. I checked out the iLeague Manager and that was a fantastic way to double check game, team and players league assignment.
Still having difficulty finding how to check or "edit" which leagues are associated with particular games from the website. From the admin website, I go to games, then click on the edit button on the far right of the game of interest. I get a pop-up that says "No Errors Detected" but don't see a way to edit anything. Must be missing something?
Also, to recap on the leagues. If my intent is to use leagues to filter my own team's stats AND I want to make sure that I can see "spray charts" for all players regardless of league, then for Games, I assign the appropriate leagues for filtering, but for all players, I assign them to ALL leagues. Finally, for Teams, I just need to make sure I worry about my own Team's league assignments being correct so they show up on the Team Website correctly. I know there are a number of scenarios for league setting combinations between Games, Players and Teams but I think this is the right combo for what I am trying to accomplish, correct?
Thanks again.

Re: Using Leagues as a filter
1) the admin web site is not designed to assign games to leagues . You are not missing anything.
The hand held device is the place to assign games to leagues. ( the admin web site does let you create leagues and assign teams to leagues, but that was originally done to o assist users who entera whole bunch of new teams and rosters (and before we had the "discover teams" feature - which is even easier).
2) the admin web site is the most flexible place to view "hit charts" for players on a team. (the team web sites are also good for viewing your teams hit charts, but opponent team hit charts are viewed off the admin web site.) You can also view by players charts on the hand held device. On the web site, when you select a team and click on the hit chart icon, you get a new pop up window that asks you if you want spray charts from which team and league etc. On hand held you select league filter first, then player in player manager to see spray chart for players by enabled leagues.
3) leagues..... For me.. Below are the assignments I care about and why,
A-games assigned to corerct leagues is a must.
B-Second, i make sure "my teams" are assigned to correct leagues (critical for team web sites).
C- Third (but less critical) i keep my opponent teams assigned to the correct leagues.
(why? I find it just helps me keep things straight as a mange multiple kids, in both softball and baseball, multiple seasons and multiple teams on a device. I tend to work with a specific league turned on, and if I don't have opponent assigned the league, if I play them again in a tournament or later in season, I have to go back to all leagues and find them and then some names are duplicated from year to year or season to season or in baseball to softball, so keeping teams assigned to correct league just helps organize me. ). ,
D) . I make sure "my kids" are also assigned to correct leagues,
( my kids are stats i review most frequently. I am less disciplined and generally don't care what league my opponent players are assigned. When I need to know what they did, I usually need info on whole opponent team . If I am, just needing info on one guy, I temporarily turn ALL League on and search in player manager ..
That is how I manage league assignment game/team/player options others likely do it differently.. just what works for me
