Here is the sequence of events:
Start of game:
B1 = single
B2 = sacrifice bunt that ends up being a hit because 3B made no attempt to field the ball
B3 = walk
B4 = ground ball to short stop, would have been easy double play. Ball goes through the wickets and then deflects off the left fielder. 3 runs score. Runner on second. Left fielder credited with an error because he allowed the runner from first to score and the batter/runner to advance to 2nd.
B5 = Single, run does not score
B6 = HPB (bases loaded)
B7 = K
B8 = single, 2 runs score
B9 = walk
B10 = line drive to left field, out 2, doubled up runner at second for 3rd out.
In scoring the inning, the dilemma is the first three runs scored because of the two errors, however, in reconstructing the inning it should have been one run scored with 2 outs - ss should have had an easy double play, leaving a man on third. 1 earned run. The next hitter with a single would have driven in the run, so 2 earned runs. The inning would have ended with the strike out.
Am I right in crediting 2 earned runs or should it be something different because the first three runs scored because of the error.
Thanks!
Earned Run / Unearned Run Question - Situation
Re: Earned Run / Unearned Run Question - Situation
I would credit 4 earned runs. Cannot assume a double play. The error by the left fielder doesn't mean anything as he would have not gotten anyone out.
I look at as after ground ball to short, situation if no errors would have been runners on 1st and third with one out and one ER. B5 single 2nd ER and runner on first and second. B6 hbp to load bases with hypothetically only one out. B7 - K 2 outs. B8 single scoring 2 more ER's.

You could also assume the SS would have thrown home to get a force or 3rd for that matter. A lot variables involved.
