Discover Teams

Post by SteelCityB » Mon Mar 04, 2013 4:06 am

Wow...great feature. I'm a little apprehensive to use this in some cases. Example:

I already have a team in my team manager from last year (fake names): "Big Creek Stars-Franklin". When I look for them in "Discover Teams", I find "Big Creek Stars Franklin". The team name is slightly different (no hyphen) and the roster is changed a little from last year (lost 5 players; added 4). If I import them...

1) Will it add as a new team, or will it ask it should over-write an existing team?

2) If added as a new team, will I be able to quickly merge any duplicate players, and how? I have several hundred players on my iPad.

I really don't want to try this out for existing teams unless I know for sure what is going to happen. Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: I just noticed that the following region is missing: USSSA - Fastpitch - There should be a "Pennsylvania Central" listed. The iPad only shows East and West.

Using the Discover functionality will treat the "source" as the master. It does not have "mapping" the way Data Sharing does.

If the team already exists on your device, when you click the Import button, it will tell you if the team already exists on your device, and will ask if you want to update the team. If you update, it will add new players. It will not delete any players. If you did "mapping" of players through the Data Sharing, you may wind up with duplicates, but you can use the Player Merge and/or Team Merge as necessary to combine the data.

Discovery should be used when you are using a trusted source of team / roster data as it will be automatic from that point forward.

The Merge options are available from the Team Manager and Player Manager screens.

We have added the Pennsylvania Central region.

Hmmm...I just tried this again, and I don't get told that the team already exists. I even changed the existing team name to match the one listed on U-trip exactly.

I am asked if I am sure I want to import the team. After responding "Yes", the system tells me that 11 players have been successfully added to team. The team manager now shows 2 of the same team, and duplicate players listed in the Player Manager.

The matching is not done by team names / player names. It is done by "internal IDs". In this case, it will be using USSSA IDs. You can use the Merge Team option to combine the two teams back into a single team, and Merge Player as needed to combine into a single team.

If you select the new USSSA team in the left list when doing the merge, you will be able to auto-update from the Discover function going forward.

I will definitely use that approach. Thanks.
