General Questions about Assigning Errors

Post by OAR » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:39 am

These are not directly related to the application but I was wondering if errors under baseball/softball rules can be assigned to players for the following plays.

1. Dropped foul ball (almost 95% certain we can)
2. Shortstop fails to cover 2nd base on steal. Runner would have been out by a mile. Not fair for catcher to get assigned a stolen base.
3. Shortstop fails to cover 2nd on a very easy potential double-play where runner left 2nd base prior line drive being caught by another infielder.
4. Outfielder makes a poor effort to catch a playable fly ball; lets it drop in front of her.

1. Yes, dropped foul balls should be errors. Use Misc -> Assign Error

2. This is not an error.

3. This is not an error

4. If they did not get a glove on it, it is probably not an error, but as scorekeeper, you would have final judgment on whether the player with ordinary effort would have been able to make the play.

Mental mistakes (failing to cover a base) are not errors, and "fairness" to a player's stats should not be a factor when scoring the plays. It is a team game, and sometimes teammates will hurt or improve other teammates statistics. The best you can do is just score by the rules, and do it consistently for all players so the stats are equally fair or unfair. :)

A couple of things to remember about scoring. On a foul ball, there should only be an error scored on a dropped foul ball if the batter reaches base. If the batter is retired during the at bat, there is no error. Also, to follow up on the last response, keep in mind there are errors and there are plays that aren't made, perhaps should have been made, but aren't errors. A pop up that an outfielder gets a bad break on perhaps "should" have been caught, but if they didn't close enough to physically make a mistake at the ball, it is not an error.

That is not correct. It is still an error even if the batter does not reach base. This is specifically spelled out in the rules of baseball. Just extending the life of a batter is the requirement for an error.
