Offensive Substitution

Beginning of inning coach will come up and say player A is subbing in for player B when he comes up to bat....

It would be great if I could then click on the kid's name in the roster on the ipad and make the sub then. I have to now hold that in my fading human memory bank until player B comes up to bat and hope I remember to tell player A he's in.

Am I getting this right? Is there no way to make an offensive sub until he's up to bat? If so, why?

you can make offensive and defensive subs at any time during the game using the substitution screens.

at the top of the substitution screen is an OFFENSE | DEFENSE Button
(if you are batting all the Offensive sub screen is disabled)

so if coach tells you while on defense, tap the fielder position make the defensive sub, then tap the offense button, and make the batting sub at that time.

I think he is referring to that situation where the manager tells you that Billy will hit for Tommy later in the inning, but Bobby is currently up, and he doesn't want to have to remember that sub when later, but make the change at the time. You can, it just may be counter-intuitive. Tap on the batter currently at bat, and then just make the change to a different spot in the order (and worry about the defensive change later, when you know what they are).
