Seasons

Post by cdave » Thu Sep 02, 2010 10:46 am

I love the league function and use it a bunch. My son plays tournament ball and I set up a new league for each tournament. In the League Manager Section, would there be a way to make a hierarchy to include Seasons so that I could put all of the Spring Tournaments into 1 Season? Right now, we are moving to Fall tournaments and I have roughly 15 leagues set up and it get confusing (especially when you want to start compiling stats for the last couple of tournament).

I don't know if this would be useful for many people, but it would help those that set-up individual tournaments as leagues. Is there another way to simplify what I am doing?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Just make two leagues. For example, I have a league called "APBA". Al my APBA games go in there. Then I have one called "APBA 1984". All 1984 APBA games go there as well as in APBA. THen I have "APBA 1984 American League". All the AL games go in all three leagues.

So if you use a hierarchy in the names, and put the games in the right leagues, you already have what you want.

That won't work because we have multiple games per tournament and we play roughly 10-15 tournaments per year (which is different than a standard league). I set up a league for each tournament (which we may play up to 6 or 7 games in a weekend) because I want to keep stats separate for each tournament. At the end of the year, I would like to put all of the leagues into a Season so I can have historical stats and get rid of some of the clutter in my League Manager (right now, I have about 20 leagues from the different tournaments I have set up over the past year and a half).

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't understand why that won't work. If you have:

A league for each tournament
A league with ALL tournaments

then you have exactly what you just said you're looking for. Just make sure the games are both in the ALL tournament league and each individual tournament league.

What am I missing that makes this not work for you?

cdave, leagues will work for your situation, (i have similar situation)

the key is to realized games need to be assigned to multiple leagues.
games are not exclusive 1:1 relationship.. it does take manual setting that can be tedious..

example assign my Bronx Bomers this weekend to
"labor day tournament league"
"fall 2010 league "
"2010 year league"
"Brox Bombers lifetime league"

I can now see team stats by what ever leagues i select,

make sense?

Thanks both or you for the suggestions. It will work and be tedious. I was more concerned about the clutter issue than the stats issue. When I pull up my League Manager, I have over 20 leagues and it looks very cluttered (and will only get worse from here on out). I was thinking if there was a Seasons tab within the Leagues tab (kind of like a file directory hierarchy), it would be less cluttered and less tedious to assign multiple leagues to the same game. That way, you could assign a 2010 Season and put all of the tournaments (Leagues) under this Season and be able to have less clutter and be able to run stats for the whole season.

Just a suggestion to make things less cluttered. I know that the current configuration can do the stats, but I am looking for less clutter. Thanks for the help.

agree it does not take long for the league manager to get cluttered. and it is tedious to assign sometimes. some grouping mechanism may help and hope FTM captures the idea and puts on the list for later consideration. the same grouping logic will be needed in other apps basketball, football, eventually too..

FYI what i do is force a sort of active leagues to the top by putting numbers in front of their names to force to top of list and z in front of leagues to float to bottom of list... it helps some. but agree not perfect

You might also consider exporting the stats for older games/leagues/seasons and then deleting them. You could always put them into spreadsheets and then use one of several iOS programs to load them onto your device, so you'd still have them locally.

Just a suggestion of what you have control over while waiting for any sort of FTM solution.

interesting point and option jcbeckman.

.though you loose the ability to track any lifetime history of a player or team and any link to team or player spotlight web site, that is an viable option that always exists. one worth considering. i had not contemplated lately, but before team web site offering that is exactly what we did, offloaded to excel.

Depends on how much you get rid of. If you just export then delete some of the leagues, and keep the games, you would still have lifetime stats available. You could always get them back as well (although you'd have to set all the games back into any particular league you wanted to track).
