Battery drain problems reported w some iOS4 installs

This is an FYI for the community... A user experience with the itouch and iOS4 loosing battery in a few hours..It does not specifically have anything to do with iscore, except that taking a iphone to a game with a dead battery makes scoring very hard...

My story.
I recently upgraded my 2nd Gen iTouch to the latest iOS 4 from apple.. (in hindsight bad idea) with it came a very undesired outcome... Ridiculous battery drain when not in use- Everything the same as before the update, The itouch with iOS4 now drains a fully charged battery while not in use in a matter of hours. (not days).

I kept charging my iPod, at night and then use it a bit in the day and later that day find it dead. I thought i was loosing my mind forgot, or to charge it or that my kids had done something to it. Turns out I was doing nothing different or wrong. I did some research online and found an apple discussion board with over 1500 posts on folks having similar problems with iPhones, iPads, iTouch after updating to iOS 4. (link to board below). With no real solve. The source of problem seems to be somehow related to iOS 4 enabled ipod keeps wifi connection active while in sleep/black screen mode. The workaround is putting itouch in airplane mode or eliminating all kinds of apps, mail calendar facebook and any apps that have notifications and push technology. Reportedly apple does not call it a problem. there is not a way to go back to pre iOS4 sleep behavior..except to use airplane mode or 'slide to' off when not in use.

(fyi i updated to 4.1 because when i plugged my itouch into iTunes to sync music, it said iPod update available and needed, I was just fine with iOS 3 and in hindsight wish i had not changed, I have now updated to 4.2.1 and still same problem.)

IScore....
I use multiple devices to iscore games, (i have not experienced the same problem with my iPad, but some board posts say them have). I prefer to us the iPad to score when I am outside the dug out as official scorer or as parent watching the game but when i am coaching and in the dug out or on the field as a base coach, I prefer the size and one hand usability of the itouch/iPhone. i prefer the itouch over the iPhone because it eliminates the interruption of phone calls and concern of some that itis a communication device vs a electronic scorebook. In airplane mode I am still fine for scoring a double header with the itouch in airplane mode.

I mention all this to help others who run across similar situation and to re iterate because, even with this huge annoyance from apple, i still find high value in the itouch / iscore combination.

If others have experienced similar problems or better yet have a better explanation or solve, please post back. Would like to hear it..

I have a similar issue with my iTouch that is on version 4.2.1. On older OS versions I could score 1 1/2 to 2 full games depending on the game length. I would use wifi to scorecast using my phone as a hotspot. Wifi was on the full time. I carry a battery backup and I would plug the iTouch into the backup between games and even with a just a few minutes of charging, I could always finish the second game. The drain on my phone battery running the hotspot was my only concern.

Currently, I can barely score one game without getting low battery warnings. I start with a full charge. I now plug into my battery backup during the first game. The pull on the battery is so strong that I can barely get enough charge into the iTouch by the 2 or 3rd inning of the second game to finish that game. By the second game, I am swapping out the cords for my battery backup to keep phone and iTouch going. Triple headers are a real treat, but it works and is worth it for iScore.

I hope to be moving to an iPad as soon as v2 comes out. From what everyone says, that should solve most of my battery issues since I will go with the 3G model. Bring it on!

Petroguy. Sounds painful.

Hopefully apple does not hurt the iPad battery life. you will really like the iPad experience for iScore. Plus Gen 2 of the iPad with camera will be great for player cards and in game pics. But be warned, you will start looking for shaded places to score from, no more direct sunlight, besides the glare, the iPad quickly overheats in direct sunlight even in the mild 80s.

It's not too bad once you get the setup down. It's just not near as nice as it was before the battery issues.

Considering I am in Houston and spend most of my scoring time in 90+ deg weather, I am a little afraid of the overheating. That is another reason to wait for iPad v2. I hope Apple helps the overheating issue a little with the next gen tablet. Shade should be fun which is why I will still bring my iTouch just in case.
