Sac Fly counting as 1AB, 0H (0 for 1)

Post by AdamB5000 » Thu May 27, 2010 6:38 am

First of all, this program is the perfect example of what the iPod/iPad is for. It so very well illustrates the features of the devices. I just downloaded it and have only run some quick one inning tests, but it's great so far. Very cool. Can't wait until my nephew begins playing organized ball! :)

That said, I have a question or potential issue. I created two teams (1992 A's and 2004 Red Sox.. for kicks) and played two one inning games. I just wanted to get the feel of the program. I didn't really try to create any unusual situations. I've always understood that a sac fly does not count as an official AB. However, when fooling around, I had the following situation and I'll describe it how the game manager describes it.

(1 out)
-Johnny Damon steals second.
(runner now on 2nd base only - 1st and 3rd open)
-#24 Manny Ramirez hits a sacrifice fly to the center fielder #6 Willie Wilson. #18 Johnny Damon advances to third.
(2 outs)

Because I did a one inning game each player that batted only had one plate appearance. It did appear that Manny was credited for 1PA, 1AB and 0H, so I assumed 0 for 1 and a .000 Avg., but I'm to understand that he should be 0-0. To be sure I later played another game in which I gave him a hit. He was 1-1 in that game with a double.

Now in the season stats he is credited with 2PA, 2AB, 1H and a .500 Avg. As far as I know he should definitely be 2PA, 1AB, 1H and a 1.000 Avg. as his first game should be 0-0 with a sac fly. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

I believe, a sacrifice fly is a batted ball that satisfies four criteria:

* There are fewer than two outs when the ball is hit.
* The ball is hit to the outfield.
* The batter is out because an outfielder or an infielder running in the outfield catches the ball (or would have been out if not for an error).
* A runner who is already on base scores on the play.

Ah! Thanks for the quick reply. I feel a little silly. I guess I should check Google or brush up on my baseball knowledge before posting problems with this software.

Thanks for the heads up.

Adam, no need to feel silly asking questions. Until 2 weeks ago when this question came up elsewhere I did not know that a sac fly required a run. I am glad someone asked so that I could learn something and score it correctly in games now.

Welcome to the board, ask away.

Adam, I 'fessed up to having the same ignorance of what qualifies as a sac fly in another thread, where FTM was explaining why when you hit sac fly they still ask if the runner on third (if there is one) scored, since the sac *requires* the score. FTM explained that, rather than deal with a barrage of questions from people like me and you about why the sac doesn't record in a situation where no runner scores from third, they simply let people enter the scoring that way, but don't count it as a sac unless it qualifies under the rules (i.e., a runner on third scores). Very interesting discussion, and it caused me to learn something new.

It's pretty rare to catch FTM in something they haven't thought pretty deeply about.....
