I'm not sure if this is an issue with the software or an enhancement request. It's an issue that comes up though as I have parents of players scoring for me, they try their best and pretty much get everything right actually, but they are unfamiliar with the software.
If there is a runner on base, let's say 1B, and a batter hits a single. It asks what happened to the runner on 1B, the score keeper selects advanced by batter on the screen that is presented. But then you look back on pitch by pitch and it says the runner on 1B was advanced to 1B by the hit, instead of advancing to 2B. I now understand the workaround is to select 2B when prompted from above, then click advanced by batter, and it scores it correctly showing them advancing to 2B or 3B or wherever they advance.
It seems like at least 1 base advanced should be assumed by default as a runner on 1B can't be advanced to 1B by a hit from the batter. A similar issue comes up with a runner on 3B was caught stealing at home. The runner was out, so they selected out, then it asked why, they said caught stealing, so it scored as caught stealing at 3B although they came from 3B. If they were picked off at 3B, then it wouldn't be an advancing play.
So this is an issue with reporting, or enhancement request, or something, not sure. I know the workaround, but I think it can be setup to run smoother than it does, especially when some of us are relying on parents that haven't used the software to keep score. Just my two cents.

Re: Advancing Runners
I am not following 0r seeing the same behavior
When I have a base runner on first and enter IN PLAY> SINGLE > the app defaults to advancing lead runner safe to second
In fact if enter a double would default to advance him to third
(iOS device)

Re: Advancing Runners
Even when you go back to review the pitch by pitch? On ours it makes it appear correct, like in the above example it shows a runner on 1B and 2B, but if you review the plays, it says the runner that was already on advanced to 1B on the hit.
Similar issue, if the runner is on 1B and steals 2B, if you don't click 2B, then select stolen base, then it will save it as the runner on 1B stole 1B. Not overwriting how they got their originally, but advancing them to a base they are already on.

Re: Advancing Runners
I have tried everything I can think of to duplicate your example when a person hits a single with a runner on 1st. So far my runner always advances to second by default.
You are correct on the stolen base. If you just tape the runner icon you get a popup menu that wants to know where the running is now. When you tap the base that runner is on you then need to tap how he/she got there. The best way to record a stolen base is to swipe your finger across the base runner icon. A popup menu will give you several options. "Stole next base" is one of those options. Just click on it and you're done.
There are several nice shortcut popups than can be activated by swiping across the base runner, OUT, FOUL and STRIKE icons.

Re: Advancing Runners
( nice post LARRY on the tip reminder for swipe base runner ,)
@eric .. Are you on android or iOS? What kind of device
Are you on most up to date version of Iscore software?
(Edited- I see on another post @eric, that you are 8" android tablet and current software.. That rules out one idea- I can not replicate your original post on not advancing a a base runner)
On stolen base
On iOS device, if a runner is on a base (example 1b) and if you tap stolen base and do not advance him (i.e. Leave on 1b). I get a pop up message that asks you to confirm "same base?" .. If you say ok, then yes steal same base.. They added that pop up window in some update a while back.
As to the original runner on first, and a batter hits a single . and pitch by pitch says runner at 1 advances to 1. I can not reproduce. Without making batter out. That is in the app and in the pith by pitch or scorecast play by play ..If you Can reproduce and then share the key steps. we can try and simulate...but at this time I can not
