Issues with Substitutions & Pinch Runners

Post by gmike » Wed Jun 17, 2009 2:14 pm

I've been scoring games by hand for over 20 years.I was at a College World Series game in Omaha on 6/14. (Texas vs. Southern Miss).

It was a great game with a large number of pitching changes and substitutions, including pinch hitters and runners. I'm assuming if I had the entire roster in before the game, I wouldn't have had as many issues... However, I was in a position where I had to add players to the roster as they entered the game. In the transition from lineup to "Play" it seemed like a lot of data was lost. Frequently I would add a pitcher, for instance, and then click the pitcher position to make the change from that screen, and no players were available for substitution. I would press the menu button and restart the program, and I would have players available to sub at that point, but previous position changes and substitutions were lost. It got to the point where the scorecard was not even close to correct. When a pinch hitter remained in the game an played a different position from the player in that lineup slot, that data was also lost.

Is this a known issue, where rosters have to be complete before a game starts?

Also, there doesn't appear to be a way to score a pinch runner. Did I miss something?

I noticed last night when I tried to use the Texas team again for a different game all the player numbers were lost.

Last, at one point, it was telling me that players who had only been up twice were x for 4. As it turns out, it was counting everything twice.

I can send the database if you would like...

After all that error reporting... the program is great in general... it was a hit among the people around me. If you keep bug fixing I think you'll have a great product. I am curious, though, when you will have a website where we can enter rosters or make edits, etc. It's a pain in the ass to enter whole rosters through the phone. Please let me know your thoughts.

Best,

Mike

Thank you for the feedback Mike. It honestly sounds like you were running into memory issues while scoring. We know for sure that the doubling of the number times a batter had been up is a memory related issue. We have a link to an application that you can run prior to running iScore (or any memory intensive application for that matter) that should help a lot. We reference it on the FAQ page of our website at:

http://iscore.fasterthanmonkeys.com/faq.jsp

It is also referenced elsewhere in this forum, but the above is the quickest link to it. We are not affiliated with this memory management product for iPhone in any way, but you will be surprised if you start using it how much memory is "lost" when you are not even running an application. This lost memory is likely the cause of most of your issues. (NOTE: You can also be sure you are running "clean" by powering off your iPhone, and pweroing it back on [NOT the same as sleep mode] - this is also described in the above link).

For your question about Pinch Runners, we actually have a thread specifically covering how to enter a pinch runner here:

Thank you, and let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
