Dropped 3rd Strike, Fielders Choice, Earned Run Calculation

Post by suttio » Wed Apr 13, 2011 7:41 am

I just noticed a possible glitch unless I am not scoring properly.

Batter #1 of the inning swings and misses on a 3rd strike, the catcher drops the ball and can't locate it in time to get the batter. Batter #1 now on first, is out on the next play from Batter #2 as a force out on second by fielders choice. (4-6). Batter #2 is safe at first base. Batter #2 eventually scores after two other base hits. No other runs score.

iScore charged the pitcher with an earned run. It is my understanding that this should be an unearned run since the run that scored would have been out at first if there wasn't a fielders choice.

Is this a scoring problem on my part or a glitch in the system for Pitcher stats?

Thanks in advance!

i believe it is correct. . there were no errors in the inning per your situation. all runs are earned.

had the fielders choice been a ground out, batter 1 would have been on second and eventually scored instead of batter two, no difference on earned runs. the fielders choice, is not an error.

Did you record the Dropped 3rd Strike as a passed ball? If it is a passed ball iscore will not record this as an earned run (just tried it) which does follow the official rules (10.16 d)

I didn't see that as an option for the dropped third strike. I saw dropped 3rd WP or just dropped 3rd. I just recorded it as a dropped 3rd. Did I miss something?

The pitcher is responsible for Wild Pitch 3rd Strikes (and Wild Pitches in general when runners advance), so those runs are earned. Passed Balls are the equivalent of errors (they have their own stat so are not "errors" per se) and do not count against the pitcher for Earned Run purposes.

After recording the 3rd strike press safe>dropped 3rd strike>it ask what happened to runner, press passed ball

It appears I should have entered the passed ball option after the screen asks what happened to the runner. I must have entered held up. I did not realize that is where I should have put the passed ball in that screen prompt. I usually used that screen for things that happened after the fact. For example in the future, if the catcher dropped the ball (passed ball), and then made an error on the throw and the runner then advanced to 2nd, how would I possibly score that on this screen prompt?

i skimmed over the original passed ball comment in the original post, sorry - jumped to the inference that fielders choice made it unearned. nice call out coachjoe, . as all have mentioned passed balls can impact the era.

to the next question, Future question....

strike, (the screen defaults to out and has D3S Ks and KL, buttons
but since safe, you will hit Safe and then get the D3S (passed ball) and Wild pitch button options)
SAFE
Dropped 3rd Strike (alternatively you could have hit in play, safe, D3S)
what happen to batter?
second
error (based on your situation, if the drop got runner to first and throw error got him to second )
touch players who caused error?
catcher

catcher will get a passed ball and an error ..

Sorry CoachJoe,

It appears we were typing at the same time. Thanks for all of your help! I just noticed something that is strange, it shows correctly on the scorecard (D3PB) and in the stats it gives the catcher a passed ball, but did charge the pitcher with the Earned Run.

This comes back full circle to your original question.. is iscore handling it correctly..

Lets simplify the situation a bit and take passed balls out of the equation..

no outs first batter reaches on error
second batter hits into a fielders choice, (U6 force out runner at first, second batter safe at first on a fielders choice.)
batter three hits a home run. How many Earned runs? iscore giving them two earned runs.

should it be one or two earned runs?

(you can simulate the same thing with passed ball)
