Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
Currently the coach for my kids little league team is loving the reports that he is getting from iScore. One request he has is that he would like to be able to look at the pitching scatter chart and see which pitch was thrown when (he would like to see if/when a kid starts to tire-out (and starts to throw balls) via the chart) . Think you guys could come up with a way to show the pitch, and the pitch count on the chart (not sure how you would, but I figure it is worth asking).
Another idea would be to slightly change the color/shading of the pitches per-inning...
Thanks!
Chris

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
The pitches start to overlap too much to be able to add extra detail to the printed charts. It is really useful for showing the "clustering" of where a pitcher was throwing during a game (i.e. probably don't want to see the cluster right down the middle... low and inside or low and outside would probably be better. We will continue looking for ways to improve the reporting however. Thank you for the suggestions.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
Pitch charts would be useful per batter as well. Ie an at bat pitch chart, line the spray chart. Leave the ball in place after the pitch is recorded, then clear the chart when the next batter is up. The prior chart is saved to a stack - assigned to both a pitcher and the batter. the biggest issue would be how to differentiate the chart if the batter faces two pitchers in a single at bat.
Color code for ball / strike / foul / in play. Then each the chart the pitcher threw to the batch could be "stacked" and flipped through if a coach wants to see how the pitcher did overall, OR the stack can be filtered by batter, so we can see what the hitter did with different pitches. - during a game while scoring the chart stack could be toggled like the spray chart is toggled.
In this "stack" mode, in addition to the color coded balls, each ball could also be numbered with the current pitch count.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
Viewing pitch sequences for individual at bats is a nice idea. It really seems to fit more in the "analytics" realm than the "scorekeeping" realm however. We do have a partner that can give this type of detail - edgehq.com. See this posting:

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
I agree that pitching stats - when looking at it from the pitchers perspective (ie a complete history of how that pitcher throws against a variety of hitters) is an analytical function - you are studying how your pitcher did against certain hitters.
However, having access to the pitch chart of the current batter - (ie how the TEAM approached an opposing hitter, regardless of pitcher) - is a STRATEGIC function - especially if it is linked to the hit chart. It would allow the coaches to easily see he struck out on three straight pitches in the dirt. Or he lined a high and inside pitch over the fence, or he battled for a 10 pitch walk.
In short having that information available in realtime during the game would give a coach a great deal of insight into the current hitter and help the team / pitcher in dealing with him.
Certainly the charts shown on a per/pitcher basis after the fact may provide additional insight, but I am much more concerned with dealing with the current hitter at the level of ball I coach.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
i do not think anyone would disagree it is nice to have, just practical limits on functionality FTM can put into a ten dollar app. perhaps in time. but in the short run, EDGEHQ is the near term option in this space.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
This really would not personally do me any good after the fact in an analytical tool. I see it most beneficial as a means to determine how I want my pitcher to approach a specific batter.
Just like you can cycle through the spray chart to see where he has gone in the last at bats, which allows me to position my fielders. i want to DURING THE game while I'm scoring tell my pitcher what the batter did with the various pitches he saw. Presumably the data is available "realtime" to the app while its scoring the game in the "pitch-by-pitch" stack. The interface to display / redisplay is available on all devices already (the pitch location box). So this request is just asking to be able to "flip" through prior at bats (in the same way as the spray chart) for the current hitter - and show those at bats in the existing box.
Perhaps if its too cluttered showing each pitch of each at bat, just should locations of pitches the batter swung at, or made contact with (in play v foul). Perhaps when showing the full spray chart, the pitch chart could show the locations of all the pitches hit when building that spray chart. This would give coaches and pitchers a very real advantage if a trend becomes visible.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
We hope to improve what we show in regards to pitches vs batters in upcoming releases. The big difference between showing hit charts vs pitch charts is there is only one hit per at bat. For a pitch chart, you could have any number of pitches per at bat, and we would have to keep an internal index of every pitch thrown to a particular batter to make it useful. We do not currently have that type of index in the system, but it is something we may add in the future.

Re: Adding info to the pitching scatter graphs
Sorry, I assumed that it was already indexed per batter, since we have a record of the pitch by pitch scoring at the game level. So I thought this might be a relatively easy feature to implement.
Anyway this would be really cool feature for me, so I'll wait patiently
Thanks again!
