UI Idea

Post by macmikeolson » Tue Oct 27, 2009 9:38 pm

I know you get plenty of ideas....

Instead of clicking In Play, maybe the user could just drag the finger from home plate to the field to indicate a hit, then drag finger from home to first to second (or where ever) instead of clicking "hit single" or "hit double". Then the other screens can come up to score the rest of the play (other runners, etc).

Just an idea.

If this were done, I would like it to be optional, as I prefer the way it is now.

It would certainly make it quicker to score, I love the idea!!

It would make it quicker (and easier) to score, especially whenever I hear a game over the radio. Could that happen with outs too?

And if, for example, the batter gets a single and goes to 2nd on an error? How will the software know without asking? Because the software won't know, it's going to have to ask about this every time. Or you will touch first then enter another first to second touch - and have to answer why for that. I think you're just going to make it more confusing to score. So I really do *not* want this unless it's optional.

Easy to answer. Drag finger to first then to second instead of straight to second. Then touch a position that made and error. This would bring up a screen asking to confirm error, or just have it put a red box around the position that was just touched then touch it again to confirm. I think there could be a lot of intuitive swipes like that. Steals could be a swipe from the guy on first to second (etc). Outs could just be hold your finger on SS position then dragging finger from the SS to first base which means a ground out. The program should know this is the typical play that would be scoring like that. There could be just 6 or so common swipes like that for most common plays. Pop-ups could be a double tap to a position on the field where the ball landed and then the third tap could be on the position (LF) that caught it.

Still sounds like more confusion and guesswork than just hitting the correct item from a list. How many gestures would I have to memorize? And if I'm double and triple tapping, how is that saving me over a single tap I do now?

Simple finger swipes and taps would reduce input by a lot. Right now, to score a pop fly to left, I need to.... tap "In Play" then tap "pop up/Fly ball" then tap for location, then tap next, then tap hard medium or soft then tap position of fielder then tap done. That is like 6-7 taps. Instead, have a a longer (held down on that first main screen) press to the field (for location of the hit) then a tap on the fielder... then have the done button be a one of three confirmation buttons of the play (<confirm hard>,< confirm medium>, <confirm soft> popout). This would be a routine pop up. A grounder could just be a tap to the from batter icon to field position then a tap to both positions that made a infield grounder and a confirm bottom (same hard -soft buttons). That is a lot less taps. It could be for the most used routine plays. A short cut if you will. Our computers have short cut, so can iScore. If it is intuitive, it wont take much to train or remember. Also it can just be for the most common play..

Related note... At the end of a game, I all all tapped out. It is a lot of input, and if their is a way to cut down on taps , please try.

But what happens when it's *not* a simple play? Scoring errors, runners advancing on throws, etc. Also, you're assuming that what *i* think is a long enough "hold" is what *you* think it is and what iScore thinks it is.

Sure, if they can come up with an easy way to do all that, great. But I find the current method to be *very* easy an intuitive. I don't need to think, just tap.

I'm also not keen on "swipes" - they don't always seem to work well on my phone, but they're better than on my older phone. Maybe they work great on the new 3GS, but we all don't have one.
