Enhancements after using 2.0

Post by jdhhauser » Tue Aug 25, 2009 11:19 pm

After using 2.0 for a while, here are some of my suggestions for 2.1.

1. Team Logos and colors. Use logos and colors within the app and on iscorecast. The batters jersey color could change and you could use the team logo on the top score banner.

2. Box score. The box score at the top of the scoring screen and iscorecast cuts off the team names (ie “Bost--” for Boston Red Sox.) Here you could use the team logo or the the team abbreviation (BOS).

3. iScorecast. A). Show the pitching zone (for users who use the pitch tracker). B) Make all fonts bigger. I don't know if it was just my screen, but the font size was really small. C) More animation. Show an animation of where the ball was hit (just like in the app) Look at CSTV's Gametracker they have great animations. D) My favorite live scoring thing on the web is ESPN's Gamecast. Steal some ideas from them.

4. Update the score banner. I was hoping 2.0 would lose the home/away and use team names. (you could also use the logos here) I liked the old way of showing balls/strikes (3-2) instead of the lit up buttons. A more dramatic way of showing a score change would be cool too.

5. The buttons accross the bottom. I would like to see the lineup button back. I also echo all the users and would add an "add note" button.

I love this app and am so excited 2.0's out. Thank you so much for taking user input like this too.

Thank you for the suggestions. We will take all these into consideration as we continue improving iScore beyond 2.0.

For iScorecast, we definitely plan to expand it in many ways... and those enhancements will come incrementally without having to wait for approvals, etc.

As an fyi on #3B, if you go to "full screen mode", the fonts should enlarge. There is an icon you can press on the iScorecast to go full screen.

For #5, Lineup was moved to the Misc button. We had too many users that were using it as an attempt to do subsitutions and they would wind up emailing us to "fix" their database because they had not watched the videos or did not understand that Lineup was specifically for the STARTING lineup. By moving it, we are hoping to eliminate this confusion.

Notes are definitely a top priority for the next big release.

Something to keep in mind with regards to team logos on the MLB front: another app I have, Baseball Statistics, used to have team logos built in to the product, but MLB made them stop doing so for some reason. I'm not sure if it would be an issue here or not (I hope not), but I wasn't sure why MLB issued a cease and desist with the other app. Some lawyers apparently have nothing better to do with their time, I guess...

I love all the new features!!. However here is one thing thing to change to make a better user experience. Please change the data that the twitter feature sends. It does not say how the last batter got on base. It just shows the status of outs ball strikes and base runner and who is up. You have know idea how the status got that way. Did that runner get to second on a steal or past ball?

How about a second twitter button that sends out last batter highlights. My son's grandparents would rather see this... "Count at 3-2 #32 Mike Smith hit double scored 2 (1 for 2), score is Thunder 3- Blues, 2 top of 3rd. You can even do pitcher tweets that some up what happened in the inning. Like... #32 Mike Smith, 23 pitches, KO=2, walked=1, gave up 2 runs, hunder 3- Blues, 2 end of 3rd

This works better as a parent letting grandparents know what their grandchild just did in the game.

There are two limits we run up against with Twitter. The number of characters allowed in a single message (140 - length of user name), and the number of tweets you are allowed to send in a day. Coming up with multiple types of tweets to send out is a good suggestion. If people have suggestions for messages that can be kept at about 125 characters or less, please let us know and we can add them to a future release.

I understand what Chapin3 is saying, but I think he'd be better off using the iScorecast feature instead (all of this information is obtainable that way, right?) and send tweets at the end of each half-inning with a summary such as:

Chicago - Bottom of 1st
Patrick Misch pitching for New York
R Theriot grounded out to shortstop.
M Bradley doubled to deep right.
D Lee singled to left, M Bradley scored, D Lee thrown out at second attempting to advance on play.
A Ramirez grounded out to pitcher.
1 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors

The above is roughly 300 characters, though, and I'm sure that some/most innings (especially with the younger kids) would be much longer. Is there a way to have Twitter automatically parse large posts into 2 or 3 smaller simultaneous ones?

If that type of summary is allowed on Twitter (not sure because I've never used it), I think that would be better than receiving an update after each pitch. Then again, admittedly I have no idea why people like Twitter so much as I've never used it.

Yes, iScorecast is definitely the better play by play / pitch by pitch tool. The twittercasting is really intended just to send occassional updates. Between innings or between half innings, or after big score changes is probably the best use.

"Tweets" are a single line of 140 characters (less the length of your twitter name), and you would generally not want to break an update across lines.

But iScorecast requires them to be at a computer waiting and watching...I am saying that most times in youth leagues it is just one player others care about, and to tweet about that one player works best without being near a computer. People usually carry their phone. Here is another suggestion. How about on a twitter or facbook button on a player card. It does a short game stat any time during the game and kept to 140 characters. For example: "#23 M. Smith, 2 for 4, HR, Single, 3 RBIs, 1 KO, 1 ground out || P: 45 pitches, 30 k, 15 Balls, 6 KOs, 2 walked, allowed 3 runs." All that is under 140 characters.

or
Second suggestion. An email button within the player's stats (accessible during the game) that emails a very readable game summary of that player (not the table style). For fun, it could be jazzed up to look more like a news feed or sports web page with player's picture. This would help iScore get known out there as this stylized email is shown or forwarded to people's friends or to other team members ( with a link to the iScore app at the bottom). iScore could be known for what cool email game/player summaries its does. Most people are not into baseball are not going to understand a stats table or the single letter at the top of the table. They can read something simple and spelled out, love a colorful page which would make customers excited and sell more apps.

Now those two ideas I really like.

Chapin, you're right about the having to be near a computer thing. I wasn't thinking about it along those terms when I responded earlier.

Both great ideas... we will add them to our list.

Thank you.
