SUBSTITUTION

Post by brian_oshea » Sat Jul 23, 2011 4:53 pm

A question on substitution. In a weekend tournament only 9 players could bat & thus the remaining 4 players were shown on the roster but not batting and no defensive position.

In the 3rd inning pitcher #44, who was listed as a sub, replaced pitcher #22, who was in the starting lineup. I correctly made the defensive change, substituting #44 for #22, but did not realize that I also had to make an offensive change since #44 was now also batting for #22. This meant moving #44 from the bottom of the lineup to where #22 was and moving #22 to the bottom. I messed the move up, putting #44 in the incorrect spot in the batting order and thus my lineup was incorrect for the rest of the game.

Why could the defensive change also not have done the change in the batting order, substituting #44 in place of #22, changed #22's status to "not batting" & #44's status to "batting" or did I just make the change incorrectly?

When doing a substitution, you do not change Batting + Not Batting in the starting lineup. This would change who was batting / not batting at the start of the game. Instead you would go to the substitution screen, tap the "Offense" tab, and do the offensive sub there. Video #3 at http://iscoresports.com/baseball/training.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; covers this topic pretty well.

My question was why do I have to make both a defensive and offensive substitution? Why cannot the defensive change not automatically also make the offensive change? When the player is removed from the game he automatically also takes the offensive position in the batting lineup. If the coach decides that a different player will in fact bat, that is a separate change.

iScore is for users of all levels. To force the issue for novice users to have both defensive and offensive changes made at the same time would not work out very well in the end. With youth baseball the coach rarely shares what the batting change would be if any and certainly doesn't share defensive changes between innings. There are some loose rule baseball games at the youth level and this app has managed to roll with the punch well using the score what you see approach. I agree for advanced users it can be a bit of a nuisance but the app has a great deal of give and take for all user levels.

Also.....iscore started with a score what you see model, you are observing the game, not the coach, you see the defensive change you tap the defensive icon and make the change.. You see an offensive change, unexpected batter, at the plate, you tap the batter icon, and tap the new name.... This is most flexible for youth ball as dan mentions, but also VERY important in MLB national league where double switches happen all the time and unless you are in the coaches head, you just have to wait and see.. Will the new pitcher bat, or who will bat for him..

This got me a couple of times this season (my first using iScore full time). However, once you get used to how it works it is not too bad.

That said, in games where there are players listed as subs (ie not batting). It would be nice if the app prompted you / reminded you to make a batting change when you make a defensive change - to save a tap or two.

Overall I've found the substitution screen to be very difficult to read in sunlight since its always in a dark colors, and since the dialog changes depending on whether you are making a sub for the offense or defense I always have to spend extra time looking at it and making sure I get it right.

I understand the "score as you see" approach, and that makes a lot of sense when you are strictly spectator. However, when you are using the app as an "official" scorekeeper for a team, you often have other responsibilities to the coaches and players that make scoring as you see much more difficult. Things to eliminate extra "taps" and more "warnings" / reminders to hopefully catch some common errors would make a great app that much better.

After I posted the last reply I realized that I should mention that this would be nice to have but not of great importance. In most of the tournament that the girls play in in Canada, everyone bats and there is unlimited defensive substation so I only have to do the defensive change as the substitute is already batting. However in provincial qualifiers, provincial & national championship & some tournament attempting to qualify to go to a U.S. Tournament, only 9 players bat. This past weekend was such a tournament (a first this year & likely only 1 more) where I messed up. So as I say nice but certainly as far as I am concerned, not major. I'm sure you have many more important request to look after, at which you do an excellent job of!!!!
