Reaching on Error

Post by CarlosPeguero » Sat May 21, 2011 11:30 pm

One option I wanted to add just for total accuracy in score keeping (and the issue did come up in a recent game), when the option window comes up after a third strike, the only two options for safe are passed ball third strike and wild pitch third strike. If the option for reach on error or fielder's choice could come up after the third strike, that would be great, because I find myself having to charge wild pitches or passed balls when it is really an error that allows the runner to reach. Thank you in advance, and I love the app.

If a batter reaches first base after a third strike, you have to score either a Passed Ball or a Wild Pitch. It is not an error.

A catcher can not be charged an error for attempting to throw out a runner after recovering a wild pitch or passed ball.

This has come up for me as well. Hitter swings at a pitch in the dirt for strike three - the catcher fields it cleanly but forgets to tag the hitter. He runs to first and a catchable throw skips off the first baseman's glove allowing the runner to reach base. Pitcher and Catcher both did their jobs, the error is on the first baseman. Currently we cannot charge the error to him - and it seems unfair to call that pitch a wild pitch or passed ball.

It may not seem fair, but iscore is correct in applying the MLB rules cited above and copied below. Your best option would be to note the catch was dropped if you are tracking that. But the truth is that the throw would have been unnecessary had the pitch not been wild or a passed ball in the first place.

"10.12(e) The official scorer shall not charge an error when the batter is awarded first base on
four called balls, when the batter is awarded first base when touched by a pitched
ball, or when the batter reaches first base as the result of a wild pitch or passed ball."

"10.12(f) The official scorer shall not charge an error when a runner or runners advance as the
result of a passed ball, a wild pitch or a balk."

10.13"(b) The official scorer shall charge a catcher with a passed ball when the catcher fails to
hold or to control a legally pitched ball that should have been held or controlled with
ordinary effort, thereby permitting a runner or runners to advance. When the third
strike is a passed ball, permitting the batter to reach first base, the official scorer
shall score a strikeout and a passed ball."
