I've noticed that when the current day is highlighted, none of the events for the current day are visible. It would be nice to be able to see everything.

Many of us have chosen to use google calendar in our team web sites from FTM, if you have familiarity with google calendar, you may want to look into that alternative, it integrates seamlessly in the team site calendar page. you add it by logging in as admin, scrolling down on calendar page to the insert url field.
