1st base coverage

What would you define as the area the 1B should be responsible for making the catch?

Have run across a few 1B's that don't seem to make much effort and teammates are receiving errors on their throws. Does the throw have to be dead in their chest to be a good throw, or what is the range that it would still be considered a good throw and the error should be on the 1B instead of the thrower?

Hello Browneyedgirl
My daughter has been playing first & third base since t-ball she is now 14 yrs.old playing school ball and 14u Usssa been on the same u-trip team for 4 yrs. I am the asst. coach. To answer your question I don't think there really is a area of where they must stay with in. sometimes we play her short sometimes long sometimes closer to second there are a lot of different places that all infielder's must be able to play what we do tell is don't play away
from the base any further then you feel comfortable at in other wards you have to be able to make it back to the base to make the play. but also remember that second base is also around the corner to help out. Then the most important thing to always remember is PLAY THE BALL THEN THE BAG. They should never be stretched out waiting on the throw at first they need to know what king of a throw is coming if its bad they need to make the adjustments and if you are already stretched out on the bag and miss the ball there's another run scored. PLAY THE BALL THEN THE BAG. As far as what is a good throw waist high to first base right at the bag remember when they stretch out how low they are to the ground but it is also the first base job is to stop the ball above all else stop the ball. And a good first basemen will very seldom let anything by them batted or thrown. I hope this helps out some :?:

I think she is asking about the movement of 1B with regards to catching throws from other fielders. If that is the question, then it really is a question of when would you assign an error to the 1B for a catchable ball. The standard is ordinary effort. Ordinary effort is basically what an average fielder could do in that same situation. I think of an average fielder as a fielder with average ability at that position for the level of ball you are playing. If that imaginary player could make the play, then a player not making the play should get an error if there is a physical misplay (not a mental error).

I'm going to guess you are related to one of the players making decent throws and they are getting charged with errors because a catch is missed. Unfortunately, this really comes down to the scorekeeper's judgment.
