i should know the answer to this but this is the only importing/exporting of league i have done. i have setup two leagues one with 23 teams that i would lime to export from nexus seven to my ipad (ipad is my backup). does that make sense...lol my brain function refuses to work properly

The "leagues" can not be transferred between devices. You can create the leagues on your iPad, and then transfer the teams using Data Sharing.

If the iPad is truly a backup, you can also use the full database transfer option (which will also copy leagues) as described here:
