Just when you thought you have seen it all...enter 10 U baseball... batter hits a line drive into the left field corner rounds second but heads back to second the throw almost gets him ...he thinks he is out and starts back to the bench but is not out the second baseman realizes what is happening and chases him to put the tag on...after a brief rundown the second baseman tags him with his glove but has the ball in his hand so he is safe at first....or is he ....how on earth do I score this....PS...runner was picked off first two pitches later...

If he ended the play at first base, would probably just score it as a single. If he ever left the base path, he probably should have been called out by the ump, but it sounds like it was definitely a clean hit (should have stood on second for a double), but since final result was the batter on first, crediting a single seems appropriate.

Reminds me of a play I saw in middle school softball last year. In a blowout game, a girl who had never played before got to bat and actually stood there long enough to walk. The next batter then walked but was called out for leaving the bag early on the next pitch. That left the new girl at second with nobody on first. So, what did she do when the ball got by the catcher on the next pitch? Yep, you guessed it. She stole first! I never did figure out how to put her back on first base.

After watching years of high-level travel ball, it's often painful to watch middle school ball.

Crazy stuff....he did walk right towards first so he never left the base line...probably would have scored it a single if he hadn't rounded second he was a quarter way to third...

@ Danger, Unfortunately, technically the base runner would be out (depending on your league, they may "let it slide" and just put her back on second as a development lesson).

I do not see a specific reference in NFHS softball rules, except not allowed to run bases 'backwards', in MLB rules, Rule 7.01 Specifically covers the situation.. Comment: If a runner legally acquires title to a base, and the pitcher assumes his pitching position, the runner may not return to a previously occupied base.

Another rule regarding the runner that rounded second base: Did he re-tag second before returning to first? For example, if a runner misses 1st base and rounds second, he must re-tag second before going back to 1st or he is out.

Yes he was on second after the tag was attempted then walked along the baseline towards first...it really bugs me that second was not included in the rule...
