Runners on first and second base, catcher attempts to pick off runner on first, the runner breaks to second on the throw to first, and the runner on second also breaks to third on the throw to first.... The first baseman turns and throws to third in an attemp to get her out but she is safe and so is the runner going to second... Record as double steal? Attempted pick off at first, runners advance on throw? Keep mind how you record this affects several other stats, two stolen bases against the catcher, both players get credit for stealing a base, which they didn't really steal?
How would I score in our program?

Not sure if it's different in softball, but pretty sure that's a double steal. That's how I would score it in baseball.

Well it kind of is against the catcher since what he did allowed them to get two steels.

There was no misplay according the description. The runners took off for the next base and reached there safely. That's a stolen base. A stolen base does not have to occur on the pitch.

Its no different than if the pitcher did the same. Throw over to first, catch the runner of guard and he has no choice but to break for the next base. If he reaches there safely, that's a stolen base.

I score for 14U travel softball, and I would call them stolen bases. When on offense, the play is called a "delayed steal" (regardless of where the catcher throws and how many runners are on).

How do most of you score base runners advancing on a passed ball (SB vs. PB)? Does it depend on whether the runner was in motion when the ball is released (fastpitch rules) versus waiting to run when the ball gets by the catcher? Sometimes it is not so easy to tell.

I alway put pd the same PB if it's a WP.. i don't think it could be a stoeln base, I use defensive indifference a lot too when no play is made on the runner advancing to the netx base..

Defensive indifference is actually supposed to be used only sparingly, for instance when the team is so far ahead they do not care anymore. SB is usually correct, even when no throw is made, but the scorekeeper will have better judgement obviously.

I score it like you said. If the runner is in motion on the pitch, then it is a stolen base. If not, then it is a PB or WP. I think the leadoffs in baseball probably help compared to softball with no leads, so I have it easier. FYI - I almost never use defensive indifference.
