Official scoring rules?

Post by Rosborn » Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:29 pm

I have a rules (scoring) question...

Runner on first, coach gives bunt (sacrifice), batter lays down a nice bunt to first baseman who turns to throw the batter/runner out at first but the second baseman isn't there, mental mistake... I've read you don't give mental errors as fielding errors? The problem, if you give the batter a hit because of a mental mistake on this play it gives your pitcher a hit against her stats and if a run scores on the play ( didn't in this case) it would also be recorded as an earned run via a base hit, the batter would also get an RBI.... So your pitcher is hurt and the other team gets a base hit, RBI, and earned run while your the pitcher is charged with an ER against her stats, which affects her ERA.

What I gave it was, SAC bunt, error on second basman for not covering first base ...so the error didn't hurt the batters BA (nor did it help it), it didn't hurt the pitcher even if a run had scored... The batter didn't get credit with an RBI, and no earned run was recorded?

Is this the correct way of scoring according to the book?

This should be scored as a hit. There was no error on the play.

Wow, you're most likely correct but I see all the negatives to the poor pitcher, the base hit and all the positives for the team at bat and it just doesn't seem fair? Thanks

With no physical misplay, I would not score it an error either. Plus, shouldn't the pitcher be covering first base on this play?

Agreed, based on the description, absolutely not an error.
