Steel on walk

Post by Camerabry » Sun Jul 24, 2011 3:48 am

Other night in a game runner on 1st stole with three balls. Batter gothis fourth ball and walked. Stat came up that it was the runners ninth steal.

Why is this a steal?
could he have been thrown out?
He would have gone to second anyway with the walk.

For it to be scored a stolen base in iscore, you would have to have entered it that way before the fourth ball..

I would not score it a stolen base unless before the pitch, if on the same pitch as fourth ball, runner is advanced by the walk. Are you saying an official scorer scored it otherwise? If so would be interested to hear more of the situation....

Likewise if the batter strikes out with two outs, runner goes, he does not get credited with a stolen base...

Watching an MLB game the other day right after a stolen base/walk it said it was his 9th stolen base. Made no sense to me, except that two nights ago on a forth ball the catcher threw to second. Couldn't figure out why the catcher threw it. Maybe he just did it on instinct and forgot it was ball four.

Once the umpire calls ball four the batter can proceed to 1st base without risk of being put out and any runner forced to advance one base do so without risk of being put out. The walk negates the steal as the catcher does not have the opportunity to put out the runner.
Don't believe everything the commentators say, most them don't know the rules.

well that's what I figured. It was actually the lower third graphic. Maybe they had it built ready for the guy to steal and they punched it up. So how do I score an error on the TD? ;)
