Calcualtion/meaning of RPA?

Post by JRG » Mon May 09, 2011 3:30 am

I suppose this is a bit of a remedial question, but I'm trying to understand the calculation (really I'm more interested in the meaning) of RPA as it is used in the batting stats. Floating over the column header on the team website stats page yields "Runs Per Plate Appearance". A quick examination of the data reveals RPA is not always R/PA (nor R/AB)--though it is some of the time.

Googling around, I found the definition of the stat RPA-Run Production Average, which is caculated by based on a myriad of offensive acts. Is this the same stat?

Frankly, I'm less interested in the specific calculation--though it might be interesting--than I am in what the stat represents, and thus what is inferred from its value.

As always, help is appreciated.

Review this post for more detailed info.

iScore i susing "Runs Per At Bat (actually Per Appearance)" for RPA. The equation is:

(Runs + RBI - HR) / PA
