first impressions and questions

Post by Marco Rocci » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:53 pm

Ok, tomorrow I have to give the iPad back to my friend, so I scored a couple more of my old games to make a list of things I'm not sure about. I find the sw is very good, and will be very useful to me, but I probably wont have other chances to use before I buy my own tablet. The season will start on april 2nd, so maybe it's better if I ask you all some things right away.

0) The date control issue I raised elsewhere, for recording old games, but that's been cleared up already

1) Player data. I have access to the complete list of the federation players... is it somehow possible to import the data in iScore, or do I have to type it in from scratch?

2) Player info. It would be useful to record the player birthdate (players here may play in more than one league, so we have to doublecheck birthdates before the games). Is there any field I could use to store this in?

3) Andvanced by batter and Held up... I suppose I just got to get the hang of this. But on a side note, there are occasions (very common in our little league) in which the play is extended by a sequence of errors. I was wondering how you handle these complex sequences. Do you add plays to the runners, after having input the main play?

4) Errors. We usually score fielding, fly and throw errors. I did not see this distinction in iScore. Did I miss it?

5) Extra base errors. We usually distinguish between situations (and errors) where the batter/runner would have been put out, from those where the batter/runner would simply have stopped safely on a previous base (extra base errors). They both count as errors as far as fielding stats go, but the distinction is useful for calculating the earned runs and reading the scoresheet.

6) Earned and unearned runs. I was expecting iScore to ask me, at least in some cases, if the scored runs where earned or not. It didn't, even thoudh it actually handled them correctly, but I know there are cases where it cannot be automatically established if a run is earned or not. How do you handle these cases?

7) Team earned runs. Are these provided for?

8) Double plays. I've had to fiddle with this a bit. We're used to recording the two plays separately on the runner and the batter (and linking the outs)... so, for example, 6-4 on the runner and 4-3 on the batter (or GDP 4-3, if it's a GDP). If I got this right, on iScore I put the 6-4-3 on the batter, and then just use the Out | Double play on the runner. It seems to be calculating the assistances correctly, at least with common DPs. Is this the correct way to do it? Aren't there situations in which it may calculate PO and assistances in an incorrect way without asking additional info? I'm thinking of a DP 3-4-3 for example (1B tags first base, throws to second, 2B throws back to 1B who tags the runner between 1st and 2nd... 2B should get an A and a DP, 1B should get 2 PO and a DP).

9) GDP. I didn't really see where this is handled. Is it done automatically?

10) Fielding stats. We're used to having fielding stats divided by defensive position. So if a player plays as both SS and 2B, for example, he'd get two different sets of stats. Is this possible?

11) Assistance on errors. For example, 3B field the ball and throws to 1B to put the batter out, but 1B drops the ball. How do I record these so as to give the 3B the assistance? If I say the batter reached on error, iScore asks who made the error, but not who else assistend in the play. Did I miss it?

Anyway... great product... I'm looking forward to using it on the field.

BTW - I'm sure once I bring it to the field, other people will start asking :D But not everyone here is keen on english. I suppose there is no italian localization, right?

(just added 11)

1 Type from scratch but I would utilize the Admin website so you can use your computer keyboard. Also I think you can do some copy/paste from your source

2 First request I have seen for this, FTM future to do list.

3 I would score it as a continuous play. For example player hits grounder to second, 4 overthrows 3, runner advances to 2nd.

in play
error
ball placement, next
error on who, 4
what happened to batter, second
error
who? 4

4 Iscore does not distinguish type of error, this is something on FTM's to do list, requested before

5

6 Iscore handles the earned/unearned for us based on I think MLB rules. There have been posts here before on specifics but I can't find them right now

7

8 yes you are scoring DP correctly 6-4-3 and Iscore handles it correctly in stats.

9 GTP is part of the stats produced by Iscore on the right hand 1/3 of the page

10 Iscore does not break down fielding stats by position. This also is on FTM's lengthy to do list as it has been requested.

for #5 - we do not distinguish since there is no stat category. If iScore gets an earned run wrong, you can modify the statistics post game to modify earned runs for a pitcher. The vast majority of the time, iScore will get it right however.

for #7 - we do not have a statistic for "team earned runs"

for #11 - you would have to edit the stats post game to add the assist for the player that should have gotten one in this situation. We have it on our enhancement list to add this capability in the future.

for #12 - no, we do not currently have any localization

Ok, thaks for all the useful info.

This means that I'll have to keep some comments on paper, just to remember where I'll have to fix the stats post-game.

Remember You can add a note to any play. Great place to scribble that reminder....if you don't have that piece of paper handy...

Right, I hadn't tried that yet. Do they show up somewhere afterwards, or do I have to know on which plays I put a comment?

Thanks,
Marco

on FTM priority list is to include them on the scorecard print out, but not there yet.

currently, the only way you know a note is there is to see it in the iscorecast play by play or pitch by pitch screens.. yo can edit the notes during and after the game at will through pitch by pitch

If they decide to include them on the scorecard, it would be nice to give it as an option so you can decide whether you want them included or not.

FTM, can you please provide any more specific information regarding when the scoring notes will be included on the scorecards? This is a feature that has been requested for quite some time, and candidly I'm a little surprised it hasn't been added yet. IMO, the ability to see notes on a scorecard is fundamental to any good scorekeeping system. Yes, I know they are available on the play by play, but frankly that is of little use to me and our coaches. Nine times out of ten, as a coach, you want to simply glance at the scorebook, and being able to see the notes in that particular view is crucial to a complete understanding of what transpired. Not trying to be difficult here, but I don't understand why such a fundamental feature (and seemingly easy to implement, but I concede I don't know what I'm talking about in that regard) is not a higher priority for FTM. I have read several posts by FTM support on these boards indicating that you plan to add that feature. My respectful question is WHEN? Sorry if my post sounds disrespectful--it is not intended to be.
