PA and AB affects on batting averages

My first post. Be gentle. In keeping stats for our team, I had a parent, actually a satellite radio sports host, ask about the batting avg and if walks, recorded in iscore, are taken out of the equation for the actual batting average. I am guessing that iscore properly accounts for BB and Hit by Pitches as it pertains to the batting average. Right? I did notice differences between the PA and the AB and saw that they reconciled with BB and hit by pitches in game. I am just putting this out there for some confirmation. iScore Novice

Dunc, welcome to the board.
Yes the BB and HBP are taken into account when generating batting avg. As I recall there was a thread some time ago regarding formula's and the BB and HBP are not included in the BA.
I am sure FTM will weigh in with a definitive vote and perhaps the actual formula.

Batting Average = Hits / At Bats
At Bats = (PlateAppearances) - (Walks) - (Hit by Pitch) - (Sactifices) - (Base awarded for Interference)

A correction, should be bases awarded due to obstruction (defensive interference) not interference (offensive interference).
NFHS Rule 2.32 reads "ART 1. interference is an act (physical or verbal) by a member of the team at bat who illegally impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder; or when a runner creates malicious contact with any fielder with or without the ball, in or out of the baseline.
ART 2 Other types of interference involve equipment, umpire and spectator."
NFHS Rule 2.60 EXCEPTION: "A batter is not charged in the record with a time at bat when (s)he makes a sacrifice hit, is hit by a pitched ball, is awarded a base on balls, is replaced before being charged with two strikes, is replaced after being charged with two strikes and the substitute does not strike out, or when (s)he advances to first base because of obstruction by a fielder."

The calculation is based on Catcher's Interference.
