marking options for stolen bases (discussion)

While I was scoring today, I started to question my choice of options. I score on an ipad.
When a player steals a base, does the term on the throw vs. stolen base impact the player stats differently? The user guide does not provide much details on scoring steals.
Thanks

Yea stolen bases and caught stealing buttons are are directly related to statistics collected. they have specific meaning in most baseball/softball league rules. SB "stolen base " and CS "caught stealing" are statistics for a baserunmer . while SBA "stolen base attempts" and CS "caught stealing" are statistics collected based off that button use for a fielder/ catcher.
On the throw is not directly related to a reported statistic. it is more general. The scorer and scorebook need to account for each base advancement. On the throw often used to desctibe a runner who advanaces on a fieldwra choice that is not an errorr. A common wxample
Is used to describe a batter/runner who hits say a single and ends up on second when the fielders make a throw on a leadinng runner at third or home.
(The user guide focus is primarily on the location of buttons and iscore features not baseball rules) .

okay so if i am uderstanding your response, i need to change my choice of buttons.
batter is in the box, runner at first base. pitch is delivered, runner takes off to second. back catcher throws to second. the runner arrives safely. i would have scored by tapping on the runner, move them to second and tap on the throw.
by doing that choice, i have been reducing the stolen base stat correct? i should be tapping stolen base instead.

Correct. Stolen Base is the correct selection in this case.

This is shifting the discussion a bit and I may have asked this before but couldn't find where I did. A play I've had a question about is runner on second. Batter hits a grounder to right field. Right fielder throws home, but it is cut off to hold batter at first. Runner scores. Batter sees no one is covering second and takes second base. Had someone been covering second the batter would have stayed at first. So do you give the batter a double? A single and second on the throw? Or a single and a stolen base? Pretty sure you can't go single and an error because I understood you can't assign an error for a mental mistake. Also does it matter if the batter continuously runs to second or hesitates and then goes to second?

Left turn clyde.. Definately a different direction
.. I don't have handy a definitive case book answer .. I have historically not consider it a stolen base. Nor an official error. I Use 'advance on throw' button for 2nd in iscore.. But if someone can find definitive scorer case reference great to learn and change.
I put the advance to second in the generic "fielders choice" bucket and use "on the throw" button in iscore. I don't use defensive indeference button for abandon bag. B/c i suspect more mental mis play than strategic. Definitely not a double, Held up button would put AB# on score card will not impact stats and on the throw puts (OT#) on scorebook seems more descriptive and does not impact SB stats
Other opinions?
FIELDER'S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair grounder and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner, throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner. The term is also used by scorers (a) to account for the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder who handles his safe hit attempts to put out a preceding runner; (b) to account for the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner; and (c) to account for the advance of a runner made solely because of the defensive team’s indifference (undefended steal).

FWIW, I would score it as a fielder's choice also and use 'On the Throw' in iScore. If it would have only been a single and the throw towards home is what led to no one covering second, then the defense chose to make an attempt on the runner going home, even if they did not follow through with it completely (cut off the throw).

I like the extra logic by PetroGuy. It was created by a valid strategic logic ..
throw towards home is what led to no one covering second, then the defense chose to make an attempt on the runner going home, even if they did not follow through with it completely (cut off the throw).
Sounds like two perspectives, consider the advance on the fielders choice not a stolen base.

I've got nothing to back this up other than intuition. I think if the batter hesitates or not rounding first enters into scoring it also. If the batter does not hesitate but continues on to second then the batter is given a single with making it to second on the throw. If the batter hesitates though and sees second is not covered and then takes second I'd give the batter a single with making second on a stolen base. See NCAA 2015 softball rule 14.14.9 which would lead you to believe the batter gets a stolen base regardless.

I still don't think that pushes me to stolen base on the throw in from outfield to home (or cut) still advance to second on the fielders choice and the throw. Look under the rules section on determining a hit or extra base hit, (mlb 10.6) they talk about the advance on fielders choice, no reference to stolen base
I would be careful using the extra SB description in fastpitch for baseball. Neither mlb nor ncaa baseball rules has similar clause you reference Under stolen base scoreing.
I also think the extra wording in softball stolen base for un attended 2nd bag, is more on the running walk or bunt coverage that leaves a speedy slapper to get on and take unattended 2 but often that throw is error bases but also just vacated .
