Fielders Choice

Post by RandyK » Tue Mar 16, 2010 3:50 pm

What are the key strokes for a situation where you have a runner on 1st and 2nd with two outs and the batter hits a ball to 3rd base. The third baseman touches the bag and the runner on 2nd is out as a result of fielders choice. I couldn't see a key for fielders choice. The only thing that was close was a Force Out on the runner at 2nd. The code that it entered in the scorebook is "U05". I'm not familiar with the code "U". I know the 05 is the third baseman though.

Maybe this is the same thing as fielders choice but wanted to make sure on this forum.

Fielder's Choice is really a designation of how the Batter made it to first safely, not how a runner makes an out. The runner is in fact forced out at third in that situation. "U" means an unassisted out was made, and is in reference to the batter. So U5 would mean the third baseman made an unassisted out at third base on the Batter. Our guess is that you entered Out for the batter instead of "In Play". For a Fielder's Choice, the ball is actually "In Play".

Here is the entry sequence for that play:

"In Play"
"Fielder's Choice" (bottom left)
Touch location and type of hit (assuming Grounder toward third baseman), "Next"
"3B"
"Done"
It asks what happened to runner on second, select "Out, Third, Force Out"

That's it.

Scorecard will then show the batter making it to first on FC, and the runner out at third on a Force Out (FO).

Thank you so much. Yes, I did some research last night and realized my error on the fielder's choice. Thank you for the help.

when you score this as you say, the scorecard reads the 3rd out in the baserunner's box. shouldn't the out be credited to the batter who caused the fielder's choice?

No, the batter is safe. The runner is out.

I understand that the runner is out an the batter was safe, but I've always been told to score the out to the batter, because he should have been out. It was the "fielder's choice" to take the leading runner. If you put the out in the runner's box, he is responsible for the out even though it wasn't his fault.

I like to show who caused the out, not just who was forced out.

Anyone else do this?

The batter is not credited with an out on a Fielders Choice - the runner is. The batter does not get a hit either ... he made it to base by Fielders Choice, so his batting average goes down just as though he made an out.

Thanks so much for the explanation. I just wanted to be sure the stats were right. Of course iScore did it perfectly!
Thanks again for such a great program. I'm coming from K-force, which I liked, but iScore is head and shoulders above!
I know your busy, but the scoring exampe sheet in the back of the manual is such a help for practicing, I'd love another page or two of examples to check myself against. I found an error in the manual, so i'd love some more example problems to figure out with answers to check myself that I knew were correct.
That's just a really great learning tool.
Thanks again so much.
