Scoring question

In an over 25 game the other day, the team I was facing had to pitch an outfielder who has never pitched before. A team mate hit a groundball to first, the first baseman went to his right and fielded the ball cleanly but the pitcher did not cover first. The batter was safe. Hit or error?
