I think I may have deleted players with first names matching players on roster before I knew how to merge players.

Deleting players will definitely cause issues... will mean that player's stats will not show on Team Stats because he does not "exist" any more. There are internal IDs for each player, so creating two players with the same name would not be the same player (there CAN be two John Smiths for example).
