scoring question
Re: scoring question
Not an umpire, just followed traveling softball for 9 years, but I think it is where the ball is when it touches the glove. If the ball is in foul territory then it is a foul. If the ball is in fair territory when it touches the glove and then goes foul it is a fair ball.

Re: scoring question
From the "Official Baseball Rules":

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2013/ ... _rules.pdf
A fair fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul
line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at
the time he touches the ball

Re: scoring question
I'm not sure what happens at other levels, but I commonly attend AA MiLB games and have noticed the umpires help you out in making the fair/foul call on a line/fly out. They'll point towards fair or foul territory after the catch on close ones.
And I agree with the posts above...I believe the umps in your case were wrong. Player position isn't what matters...the position of the ball is. On an out, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference. If it's tipped & falls to the ground, it becomes really important.
