5-5-3 DP bases loaded no outs

Post by Ef2255 » Sat Apr 06, 2013 2:08 am

I encountered a problem scoring a double play where the bases were loaded no outs and the batter hits a ground ball to third. Runner from third scores, runner from second is forced out at third as third baseman steps on the bag and throws to first. Looking at prior posts I scored it as a ground out, selected 5-5-3 as my sequence, runner on third scored, runner at second out double play. First problem is my scorebook shows runner at first as the first out instead of the second out. The second problem is really curious the scorebook indicates no rbi dot for the hitter which is correct but the stats does give the hitter an RBI. I know I can correct this once the game is over but just thought I would mention it as weird. Everything else in the scorebook looks fine it even shows the runner on second as an FO but as the second out instead of the first. The batter shows DP 5-5-3 but as the first out. Is there anyway to fix this?

Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Nothing you can do about the sequence of outs on the scorecard. Thats how it has to be scored. Its mostly immaterial, but it does bother some people.

The RBI was credited due to runner being "advanced by batter". When you select advanced by batter, it credits an RBI (even though as you noted, it should not in this case). If you used "advanced on throw" instead, it would be correct.

This is not real intuitive. Not sure if FTM could create logic in the app to not credit the RBI in this case if "advanced by batter" was used on a double play. As you point out, it seems that the logic is there for the scorecard.

Also, you can score this as 5-3. The 5-5-3 is not necessary.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for answering my question. Just FYI I know 5-5-3 is unnecessary it just makes it easier for me to spot DP's after the fact. Thank you for pointing that out as well. It's to bad we can't adjust the order of the outs even though it has no impact on the stats. Just very annoying to us old time purists. Maybe Iscore can improve on this in the future just like the strikeout - throw em out DP.

I'm curious as to what the logic is behind no RBI on this play. Are all ground outs when a run scored not given an RBI, or is it just because of the DP? I would think an RBI would be awarded because the result of the at bat is similar to a SAC Fly.

Rule 10.04 (b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in (1) when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play;

Thanks Team Mom. I figured it may have been because of the DP.
